ATLANTA (PRN, — How would you like a career as a
chicken sexer? The qualifications are “good eyesight and gentle
but nimble fingers,” according to our new secretary, Patty
Swinford. Her father Fred Koto has been separating the girls
from the boys for over 20 years.
Mr. Koto and his wife moved to Georgia before the egg and
broiler boom. At that time he and the other 3 or 4 sexers
traveled from hatchery to hatchery, working especially hard in
the spring. Today there are 30 men (and women) who handle
the business in Georgia.
Although many Japanese are performing the task, anyone can
do it. Perhaps the Japanese are known for being skilled in chick
sexing because it was developed in Japan. Mr. Koto says it was
pretty much an economic necessity. The farmers did not have
enough foodstuff to feed the chickens until they sprouted
combs and were obviously roosters. Since chicken’s sex organs
are inside of the body it took a clever man to accurately figure
out which were the roosters and which were the hens. It can be
done, and it is much more precise than looking at cats or dogs.
Half the eggs laid for hatching purposes develop into roosters
and Mr. Koto says, “they have little or no economic value just
like some men.” On the other hand, men who perform chick
sexing are of terrific economic value. A real expert can earn $lO
per hour calculated on the fee per chicken basis. In addition he
makes little or no investment for equipment -just a good strong
light. Today chick sexing in the United States is still
economically feasible.
Ordinarily I refer to Dr. David Ruben’s book on
EVERYTHING YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW
ABOUT SEX. Now I can ask our Secretary. A daughter of a
chick sexer should have ALL the answers!
