Free Drivers
Licenses Popular
With Georgia Vets
\tlanta — Almost without
exception, the first benefit for
which most Georgia veterans
apply when they return home
is the free lifetime driver’s
license,
Georgia Veterans Service
Director Pete Wheeler said,
“To qualify for a free driver’s
license, a veteran must have
been a resident of Georgia at
the time he entered military
service and also a legal resi
dent of the state when he
applies for the license.”

Wheeler emphasized, “Despite
some reports to the contrary,
the license is absolutely free,
There is no charge whatsoever
unless a veteran wants his
picture to appear on his li
cense. In that case there is a
fee of fifty cents.”
First offered as a token of
appreciation to Georgia vet
erans of World War 11, the
license has since been made
available to those veterans
who served on active duty
during the Spanish-American
War, World War I, the Korean
War and the war in Viet Nam.
In addition, proof of-actual
participation in the Lebanon
and Berlin crises will qualify
a veteran for the free license.
A considerable number of
veterans’ dependents also
might be eligible for the free
drivers’ licenses. ‘‘Under cer
tain conditions,’said Wheeler,
“a surviving spouse of a vet
eran may qualify for a free
license. Also the spouse of a
veteran still living, but so dis
abled that he cannot drive,
possibly could be eligible.”
Eligibility for a free drivers’
license may be established at
any office of the Georgia De
partment of Veterans Service.
The actual license may then
be obtained from the Depart
ment of Public Safety.
