Care Os Figs
By David H. Williams
Like figs? February is a
good time to transplant them.
Here are a few tips which
may help you with your fig
planting. First, remember
that figs will not stand severe
cold without protection. So
plant them on the South or
Southeast side of a building.
Second, the fig has a shallow
root system. So don’t plant
them too deep. Because the
roots are shallow, a good thick
mulch is recommended.
In the third place, figs are
highly susceptible to nema
todes. Either treat the soil,
or plant close to a building.
Close to a building, the fig’s
roots will grow under the
structure, and there are no
nematodes there.
C. D. Spivey, Extension Ser
vice horticulturist, says a
healthy, well-cared-for ma
ture fig tree should yieldabout
50 pounds of fruit a year.
Fertilize Grapes
Fertilizer for grapes should
be applied before new growth
begins in the spring. Bunch
grapes must be fertilized and
cared for if they are toyielda
maximum crop.
Newly transplanted vines
should receive one-half pound
of a 5-10-15 or 6-12-12 at
transplanting.
Vines two to three years
old should get one pound of
fertilizer for each year of
age.
In an established vineyard,
the recommended rate of
5-10-15 or 6-12-12 is 800 to
1,000 pounds per acre.
Lime For
Vegetables
Vegetable growers who have
not soil tested their fields
should do so immediately. If
tire soil test shows a low
pH, finely ground lime should
be applied just as soon as
possible.
Every year many growers
in this area get poor yields
and quality of such crops as
beans, tomatoes, cantaloupes,
watermelons and greens by
trying to grow them on acid
soils.
A proper liming program
that maintains a pH of 6.0
to 6.5 can prevent these un
necessary losses.
