BETTER PORK
For years research programs
have worked toward the goal
of developing hogs that
produce leaner pork. More
hogs than ever before are now
being produced with high lean
proportions and relatively little
back-fat in response to
consumer preferences. The new
pork has more protein and less
fat than the old variety. While
the supply is plentiful and the
price low, buy and store a
supply in the food freezer.

VA BENEFITS
AVAILABLE TO
VETS’ SURVIVORS
Atlanta— Georgia Veterans
Service Director Pete Wheeler
this week called attention to
the fact that the Veterans
Administration administers
some benefits to certain wid
ows, children and parents of
veterans.
Widows and children of
veterans who died because of
service-connected disabilities
are eligible for educational
benefits. This educational
assistance is also available to
wives and children of veterans
who are permanently and to
tally disabled as a result of a
service-connected disability,
or of servicemen who are miss
ing in action or are prisoners
of war.
Another benefit is compen
sation to certain widows, mi
nor children and parents of
deceased veterans. Other ben
efits pertain to home loans
and pensions.
Wheeler - said, “Positive
identification of a veteran is
necessary in the filing of any
claim. If a veteran has ever
filed a claim with the VA
and his family knows his file
or ‘C’ number, there will be
no problem of identification.
“Otherwise, it will be
necessary to establish a vet
eran’s identity by submitting
a copy of his service dis
charge, his military service
number, or the branch of ser
vice along with the dates
served.”
Wheeler added that certain
documents such as the vet
eran’s birth and death certifi
cates, his marriage certificate
and the birth certificates of
his children may also be re
quired if such information is
not already included in VA
files.
Any person desiring more
detailed information on vet
erans’ benefits should contact
the nearest office of the
Georgia Department of Vet
* erans Service.

Glynco’s gates will open at
11 a.m. for the Open House
featuring a National Aero

an opportunity to get a close
look at a piece of earth’s

Enforcement Os
Billboard Law
Is Slow Process
Georgia’s rigid new outdoor
advertising law is now being
enforced throughout the state
— but at a rather slow pace.
However, state officials say
little by little the signs are
coming down.
“What people don’t seem
to realize,” declared Bill
Owen, in charge of enforcing
the law for the State Highway
Department, “is that we have
40-odd thousand billboards to
deal with. This is a new law
and it’s sort of a slow pro
cess.”
So-called “junk signa”
nailed to trees or painted on
large rocks advertising
“Peaches” or “Apples” ar
other commodities virtually
have disappeared from the
interstate system and are be
ing removed from primary
state roads, it was pointed
out.
Illegal billboards -- the
main thrust of the new law —
will be coming down soon,
state officials say. However,
no target date has been set.:
The state law was passed
in the latter part of 1971 to
bring Georgia intocompliance
with the Federal Highway
Beautification Act. The state
was warned to comply with
the law or face losing 10 per
cent of its federal highway
funds.
