It has been prophesied that the
nomination of Thurman for the
Vice-presidency would result in a
republican victory in Indiana. We
do not believe it, but if we lose in
Indiana we will gain in California
and Nevada.
R}V. W, D. Anderson, formerly
presiding elder of the Elberton
District, North Georgia Conference
and now pastor of the first Metho
dist Church at Athens, has been
suggested for the position of chan
cellor of the University. He
would make a good one.

A nomination for representative in
a small oout ty hi e Banks, a county
too, without an opposing party to
fight, is not only onmeessary, but cnl
onlated to injure the cause of organiz
ed democracy. It 6macks of rirg rule
and local bessiem. Let the conven
tion pull off the bridle, and then, the
devil take the hindmost.
The Free for All Race.
Since our last iasne we have talked
with a large number of democrats, in
and fL.rent portions of tb count?, on the
culject of a nomination for representa
tive, and we have yet to find a single
man who has not endorsed the po*i
tion of the Observer on the above
qneation.
We think the convention will act
wisely to‘‘pull i ff the bridle,” and al
low every candidate to enter tbe field
for himself and teat bis strength be
fore the people
The last Senatorial Convention
which met at Gillsville two years
ago, passed a resolution which will
deprive Banks of representation in
the senatorial district for a number
of years. Banks county is not sat
isfied with it, and we are going to
have it over or else w r e will have a
fuss. If the old plan is
onougli for Hall and Jackson w r e
will be able to hold the balance of
power against either county and
break up the rotation system en
tirely.
Democrats all over the union
will rejoice to know that Cleveland
and Thurman have been chosen as
the standard-bearers of the demo
cratic party. The name of Cleve
land alone is sufficient to carry the
democratic party through to victo
ry, but Allen G. Thurman is a tow
er of strength, and will add stren
gth to the ticket in the West, The
platform adopted is a ropitition of
the political principles of the plat
form of 1884, and an endorsement
of Cleveland’s message, It will
sweep the country. The grandest
victory the democratic party has
ever won is just ahead of us.
On Friday night Deputy U. S.
Marshal Grant captured two white
men in Clarksville—Monroe Sose
bee and a Mr. Smith—having in
charge a wagon and two ox team
and a portion of a barrel of corn
whiskey. The barrel, we under
stand, was stamped all right, show
ing that the tax had been paid on
it, but we suppose the charge
against them is for retailing, as
we learn the barrel only contained
a few gallons of whisky when cap
tured. The parties were taken to
Gainesville for trial on Monday
morning,—[Clarksville Advertiser
Laws enaGted by corrupt politi
cians have erected monopolies that
have absorbed one-lmlf the wealth
of this country, and continue to
suck the life-blood of the people.
All the great necessities of life
in this country, exeepting only the
air—and that would be monopo
lized if it had solidity like the earth
—are now controlled by soulless j
and mercenary corporation* and
trusts. If the government contin
ues fostering such gigantic swin
dles, our rulers will one day—like
Belshazzar—see the handwriting
on the wall, but when it is too late to
stay the tide bloody revolution.
For many and many a long month
previous to the assembly of the Na
tional "Democratic Convention in St.
Louis was it a foregone oono’usion
that Mr. Cleveland would again re
oei T e the nomination as tbe man
for tbe presidency of the United States
Tbe notion of the convention on Wed
nesday was therefore a surprise to no
body.
Bnt it ie Done the less a reason for
rincere congratulation, aa Mr. Cleve
land's nomination means his election
by an easy majority over even inch a
poweiful antagonist as Jud*e Giesh
am, if indeed tbe latter, not Mr. Blaine
be the republican nominee As to Mr
Blaine, he is too astute a man of af
fairs to enter for the second time upon
a campaign which can result in noth
ms: to him but obloquy and defeat. --

Duties of the County Convention,
The convention which will meet
in Homer, on the Ist Tuesday in
July, will be of importance, and
we hope the people will turn out
and attend the district primaries
on the 4th Saturday in June, and
send their delegates fully instruct
ed, They will consider the advis
ability of nominating a candidate
for the legislature, and if they de
cide it to b-i a wise policy to nomi
nate, the ablest and most conserv
ative democrat in the county,
should have the nomination. He
should be a man the people know
to be honest and faithful. He
should be known to have no affili
ation with rings, lobbys, and rail
read speculators, and he ought to
be a man that would be willing to
stick to Sen. Colquitt through
thick and thin.
