A Hornet’a Nest in a Clock. C. F. Klene, a jeweler in San An tonio, Texas, has a very great cariosi ty in the shape of & small round clock, stick as -are sold gene-eiiy for abont two dollars, containing a hornet’s nest. A young man brought it to him say ing hie mother had had it fixed only a f*w weeks befoie and it wouldn't work. •When Mr. ILleine oatue to open the cloak, whit wan bis astonishment to find a beautifully constructed wasp’s aest, or mud-throwers, as they are call ad thereabouts. So pleased was he with the novel sight that ha gave the yonrg man anew dock for the old one and had the onrioeity photograph ed. The industrious little animals en tered throcgh the bole in the top of the clock, where the hammer of the alarm works, and proceeded to m ike themselves at home.—[New York Graphic. Tea Drinking and tbe Teeth. Some years since, when on duty at rseruiting stations in the north of Eng land, i took observation ca the great rmovotof disease and loss of the teeth existing among the elass of men ofifer iig themselves. It became a cause of rejection of itself in great numbers. As far aw inquiries went I waa led to trace it to the excessive tea drinking indulged in by the working classes in tbe manufacturing towns, and thia vent on all through the day, whether with iood or not. In fact, instead of o a slock tea being the invention of the tipper classes, it was found to ex ist to &o injurious extent in the work-, ing classes long netore that time. Tea serpus to htv a peculiar teudwacy to cause hypeieetnitt in the tooth sacs, leading to and, eventu al ly t abscess of tha fang, with, ot coarse, dea.ralgi* at every stage. Whether this special tendency was due to iheine or tannin having an elective affinity for dentine it is Hoc possible for me to eay. It would be carioo* to know it medical uien, practicing in such manufacturing districts, bad ob weired tbe deterioration of teeth to be coincident with tea drinking. Lola in Aims, Sunday morning it was cireulaied ia Lula iba* two brothers, the names we could not learn, had committed an uu nsu’ubla crime upon a lady living near Lula. A Tropical Spider Web. Dr. Oswald describee in uie Sam merlsad Sketches some a..usually strong webs which he eame aoroaa in the woods of Central America. Tbe Tovreys pinea swarmed with a Email and short-tailed variety of the genns Pams (tomtits,) and on the samst ees be noticed son oral bird-spider rats. One of those, say* Dr. Oswald, had a diameter of more than six feet, with ont including the long brace thread* that ran out like foreataya to tbe ex iremity of the surrounding branches To judge from the tenacity of their filament®, I should think that they would make a good substitute for coare* silk. I had no means of meas uring the *trength of the single threads, but I found that tbe main body of the wsb stopped a number of wild lemons, about the siie of a pigeon egg, which I flung against tbe centre with all rav might, and from a distance of hardly fifteen yards. The animal, itaelf, has a peculiar talent for keeping out of sight. I remember that I once raw. mag?d for half au hour around a leaf less cataipn bush, before I detected ihe eigig legged weaver that had nearly covered the tree with hie Tiscid tissue*), Morphine Instead ot Quinine. Sunday morning tbe supply of quinine being exhausted, oae of the teachers wae dis*p:oh*d to King’s Bell tower drug store for new supply. The qniaino was weighed out, placed in a vial and labelled by the clerk and delivered to the customer. When c<r ried back to the school the drug was put in capsules by the principal and given to the children and one teacher. lu a short time they showed peon liar symptoms of languor and drowsi ness, and soon it became apparent to the principal that some patent drug had been taken and the children were poisoned. How many victims there were cannot be stated accurately. Dr. Baker i out of the city to day, and the school teachers refuse to give information for publication. The number varies from four to twenty in the best statements obtainable- The drug was morphine, and for a few hours there was the great est ezoitement, ac the scholars suc cumbed to its influence. Heroic meas ures and the free use of the stomach pump brought all of them through safely, and there is no danger now <x* oept in the case of one who was aick with fever when the poison was admin istered, and was greatly exhausted by the severe remedies. ) The clerk who sold the drug claims I that he sold quinine, but he has been discharged by bis employer.
