A protracted meeting opened at the Presbyterian church Saturday, The hogs are dying around town with some sort of disease. It was the pleasure of the writer to take dinner with Dr. Lockhart and his good family, Sunday. The watermelon cro, is the larg est that has been in i.iis section for several years. Turnips have been sown by some, but the weather has been so hot it is feared the seed is killed in the ground. Judge T. F. Hill, Hon. a. P. Wafford and Messrs. J. H. Cau dell and R. J. Dyar, attended the Gubernatorial Convention last week, They report hot weather and much politics in the Gate City. Misses Emma Harmon, Maggie Forbes, Nettie Dyar, Bird ; e Forbes, Messrs, Cartledge and Collins with Misses Eddie Forbes and Annie Cartledge, gave this office a call Monday evening. In this issue appears the Adver tisement of Power <fc Gunnells, Harmony Grove. These gentle men are well known in Banks, The firm has a large trade in this section, and their patronage con tinues to grow. Quite a number of Homer’s Resi dence are badly in need of paint ing. This would greatly improve the looks of the town. It would give a more pleasant appearance to things in general. A severe drouth is prevailing in the southern and southeastern por tions of flie* county, greatly to the injury farmers. In some places it is noticed they are cutting down thephaii/rigtLwn and withered stalks of corn to make feed. The pleasure of tneeting Mrod. >l. a\ taway, trav eling agent for D, Appleton’ & Co’s publications, oivlp glay this week. He is a true friend of education, and is thoroughly informed in all matters pertaining to school books. It is thought that Pow r ell Water’s health may prevent his running another race for tax-collector. He has made a good officer. This will leave the field at present, to Mr. H, J. David, who is very popular with the people. A beautiful pet squirrel belong ing to the Senior editor makes oc casional calls at this office. Its home is in the large oaks on the public square, but it is very gentle, and will take food from any one’s hand. Boys will bear in mind not to bother it, * Read the adveitisement of Har.- elton & Dozier, the Athens Music House, which appears in this issue. They keep everything in the line of musical instruments, from a ban jo string to a fine piano or or* an. They will sell at the lowest possi ble prices and guarantee their goods to be first-class. Give them a call when in Athens. If just one-third of the people of this section, who come to church here, would also patronize the bus inessof the place, Homer would soon build up; but they won’t. Oh, no! They must buy their goods somewhere else; come to Homer, as it were, seemingly to shake off their sms committed somewhere else, This is every-day observa tion. It is logic—plain, unpreten tious, unadulterated logic—con demn the assertion if you will! The advertisement of Wade & Sledge, Druggists and Pharmacists. Athens, appears in this issue. They are doiDg a good business and will pay particular attention to the drug trade of northeast Ga. Ord- ers by mail will receive prom tention. From a personal acqua ancewith this firm we can co dentlv recommend them to people of this section, feeling sured that the public can not better than to give them a c when iu Athene. The writer visited Maysvillo Athens last week. Themercli ts of the former place are in xl spirits over the present outlook oi the coming crops. Messrs. Comer & Carr will soon have their large and commodious brick store finish ed for the fall trade. Messrs. Oarr & Bacon will soon have their large and commodious brick store com pleted for the fall trade. The busi nessmen of Maysville are clover and deserving a good share of Banks’ patronage. Athens is not feeling very spir ited over the crops in her section. Round about, for poveral miles of the city, crops look bad, seemingly no hope for them. While in the growing city llie writer made Ins usual call at. the Banner-Watchman and G.aphic offices. In the former Messrs. Dope and Jackson were at their p >st of duty penning down the news 1 hey report business very good. The Graphic office seems to be th iviig. The proprietors are satisfiei with their present income.
