Hunting With I)og. All hounds, save the greyhound run entirely by scent. When they come upon the faint scent of a track they will work aleng it until it grows fresher, and then begin to bay or ‘-give tongue.” There is always a correspondence between the baying and the trail. An ex perienced hunter can tell by Ihe baying not only where the dog is, but by the frequency and confi dence of the sound, how fresh the trail is—that is, how close upon his game the dogs is. All hunted animals have a way of doubling, or running in circles. Hence, if a Imnfer observes by haying that his dog is going away from him, lie wait* patiently, sometimes for min Utes, sometimes for hours, until the circle is made and he hears tin dog approaching. Then lie is on the alert for a shot for the game is probably not many rods in advance of the dog. A hound is seldom lost. His nose is his compass. Whenever he pleases, he can take up his mas ter’s track and find him, or he can retrace his own steps homeward. Hogs do not seem to enjoy those odors that please us. A deg will tura away disappointed and indif ferent from the finest of perfumes. Except the scent of those things which he would like to eat, I have nerer found anything that seemed to delight a dog's sense of smell. The day the disastrous contlagra tion occurred, E. J. Sevier, one of the leading insurance agents in the city, received a letter from ene of his companies in which they sug gested that lie was carrying per haps too much insurance in the Griffin Caldwell block. That night he answered the letter and wrote that ho considered it one of the saf est risks in the city; that the build ing was so constructed that even if a fire started in one section it could not spread. He sealed the letter and just as he handed it to his brother to mail, the fire alarm sounded. He ran out and saw the block in flames at the very point lie had just written about.—(Chat tanooga (Tenn.) Times. In almost every school there is an unpopular boy or girl—plain, stupid and disagreeable, as it seems —lor whom nobody lias a good word. If there is in your particu larschool such an unfortunate lit tle outcast, whose lite is all east wind and no sunshine, try and make friends with him or her. You will never regret your kiud neis; take the truth for that. In your daily ilfe you may meet people that are seemingly cold and distant; but do not be hasty in form ing an opinion—as the sunshine melts the ice from around the rose bud, kindness will melt the heart that may be incased in stone. In a little while you will discover that the plain face has in it something really p!e ising, it not actually beau tiful; that the stupid head has plen fy of sound sense and bright fancy, and that the disagreeable manners ot unfriendliness melt away. Pray make this small experi ment. For yourself you will gain a faithful, loyal friend, and that is no trifling gain.
