THE PRIHARY.
We havo been mincing along on
thc subject of a while primary for
a long time, and we are indeed
proud to see it is having a telling
effect on the thoughtful citizens
of the comity . It now seems al
most certain'!hat one will be or
<l«red by a committee, composed
of populists and democrats. And
w«* want to ask why wo shouldn’t
unite in a white man’s country
for the election of a white man.
We care not who is elected just so
be is elected by tho white men.
We don’t care if his record show*
that he has been a populist or
n democrat, jltst so he in tbo white
man’s choice. We want to go
to a primary to eliminate tho
purohaseahle nett,> vote, and
the sake of purifying elections,
We don’t want to go into a pri
mary because wo think it will
better one candidate’s chance of
election any more Ilian another,
but because w« vhiiik the
should bo elected hy the
men, and we say let’s have a
WHITE primary (not a democrat
or uopulist primary), and invite
every white man in the county to
participate. Then if there is a
candidate who don’t want to go
into it let him take his littlo two
hundred negroes and meet us in
October—we’ll show him and his
little band of negroes that this is
u white man’s country and that
the officers shall be the choice of
the while men.
v. ;-Bomo .
g may say tliat aii_ indepen
nt w. -id come out. Suppose
he does, hs can’t defeat^tho bal
ance of the county, surely, Ho
couldn’t lione to get more than
three hundred votes at the best.
When the white people unite m a
white primary it seems to bring
them closer together, they forget
past differences, they feel that
they are once more united for tho
election of best men to office, and
will vote for the best mn.i regard
lets of past party affillmtions,
We have talked with sevetal
prominent populists recontlj, and
all of them are heartily in favor
of a primary, and wo think
all of the candidates are m
of it. so what is the need to put it
Off. Just think what a moss wo
had last election day, and ask
yourself the question, do I want
to mingle in that kind of election
any more?
FLEMING’S RETRACTION.
In yesterday’s Augusta Chron
icle Mr. Fleming completely and
J ally retracts liis 4 bittor charge
that Mr. Hardwick falsified tho
Congressional Record. He ad
mits that he was mistaken, and
♦hat his charges Against Mr. Hard
wick were entirely unfounded, in
this respect at least.
As Mr, Fleming says, “I may
make mistakes like other men.”
The Progress helrm s that it is a
dangerous as well ns cruel thing
for a public man, a Congressman,
to make a mistake like this, and
about so recent an occurrence, t he
incident having occurred on Jan.
22, 1902, and then, based oil such
a .“mistake,” to deliberately
eharge his opponent, who although
a younger man, is of high charac
ter, and whose character is equal
ly as valuable to him as is that of
liis his opponent, with “falsifica
tion,” “intended deception,”
“fraud” –e. This is handling
character rather carelessly and is
bard to overlook.
When Mr. Fleming’s letter
above referred to. was written he
had not seen Mr. Hardwick’s in
terview, which appears in
paper, and which speaks for itself.
Mr. Hardwick admits that Mr.
Fleming 111 his rejoinder, J quotas
correctly and literally ,, tho ,
of the platform, and contends
that he use ! words substantially
