The mail car, the dining car and the two forward sleepers went into the ditch. The tender Was ditched, but the engine remained on, the track. The derailed coaches were smashed to kindling wood, even the axles being bent oiU of shape. The conductor went to a farm house and telephoned a report of the wreck. , The railroad officials then sent a re lief trajn from Fort Madison. . Every effort is being made to complete the list of dead and wounded, but most of the latter are in the railroad hospital at Fort Madison and those in charge refuse informa tion. BOOKER GETS A CHECK. Atlanta Man Donates Neat Sum to Negro School at Tuskegee. The Ogden party reached Tuskegee, Ala., early Tuesday morning and were driven to the Alabama Conference college, where they were given a re eeption under a hug oak tree on the campus. Following this they went to the Tus kegee Normal and Industrial Institute, Booker T. Washington’s school for col ored students, for the day’s ’exercises there. Among the prominent men at Tuske gee on this occasion, in addition to the Ogden party, were Governor Jelks, of Alabama, and Mr. H. M. Atkinson, of Atlanta, and President C. A. Wick ersham, of the Atlanta and West Point railway. Mr. Atkinson and President Wicker sham spent Monday with Mr. William H. Baldwin, Jr., inspecting the work of the institute and attended the even ing exercises in the chapel, Mr. Atkinson was so much impressed with what he saw that he handed Prin cipal Washington a check for $1,000 to help on the work. The forenoon exercises at the insti tute were devoted to the dedication of the Carnegie library, following which an old-fashioned out-door barbecue din ner was served. The afternoon was devoted to the annual exercises of Tuskegee institute. HANNA FAILS HERE. Despite All Efforts to Avert, Gigantic Strike Seems Imminent. All indications point to a gigantic strike of the miners in the anthracite coal regians, involving over a hundred thousand men Senator Hanna, of the national civic federation, has been in New York some days trying to get the operators and the miners to agree, but his ef forts have been futile and a strike seems inevitable. It is learned that the operators are sot against granting the demands of the miners in spite of the influence of Senator Hanna. FIFTY HURT IN WRECK. in England Train Plunges From a Bridge and Plays Havoc. Advices-from London state that fifty persons were injured Friday morning in an accident in the Great Eastern railway, near the Downs station. A train from Waltham was crossing a bridge.
