Docility Is Neglected
i When Ewes Are Roughed
The person who has roughed his
ewes through from fall until lambing
i day will find that he hss neglected one
very important feature, and that Is
docility, fur with the roughing of live
atock generally goes negligence. It is
a very easy mutter to open the yard
gates and with a admit turn the sheep
in and out pell-mell. Hut If the owner
or herdsman would take about half
an hour night and morning prior to

about and examine lvls tlock carefully,

How Glue Cleat • Glass
An Item In the florists Exchange
tells of using glue (o clean greenhouse
glass. A solution of glue waa painted
over the glass, and when It cracked
and peeled off In a few days It brought
with It most of the sooty deposit on
the glass. The remainder was ao
loosened that It was easily washed off
with the hose and a swab.
How Damask It Made
In weaving llueu the use of n single
thread makes a single damask; two
threads a double dnmask. The double
damask weave Is the more desirable
and the pattern stands out distinctly,
due to the play of light and shade ou
the threads. However, a good quality
of single damask Is better than a poof
quality of double damask.

Hew Birds Employ ‘‘Egg
“Tooth” to Break Sheila
Frequently It occurs to some of us
not acquainted with the very thorough
manner In which nature equips all of
her creatures to meet emergencies, to
wonder how It is that baby hlrds.
whose soft, immature beaks are easily
damaged, are able to peck their way to
freedom through shells that are often
times very tough and hard. Close oh
servers have discovered that each tiny
chick, whatever the species, Is provid
*d with a special Instrument to aid It
In escaping from Its eggshell prison.
This is known as the “egg tooth,'* and
consists of a hard-pointed plate grow
ing on the tip of the upper half of the
beak. The “egg tooth,” which has no
other purpose than that of breaking
the shell at the proper time, drops
from the beak after the bird is hatched.
Hov “Leap Year*” Come
Those exactly divisible by four are
leap years, except the years ending
a century, such as 1800, 1900, etc.,
which are leap years only If exactly
divisible by 400, such as 2000, 2400,
ate. The years 1918, 1920, 1924 and
1928 were ail leap years. The reason
for this method of figuring leap years
Is that the exact solar year (or time
taken for the earth to revolve around
the sun) Is 865.24224 days. If every
fourth year were leap year, this would
make the average year 305.25 days
long, an excess of .00028 day. Conse
quently the present or Gregorian cal
endar provides for only 97 leap years
In every 400 years, making the aver
age year 805.2425 duys, or rei/ nearly
oorrect.
How Eskimos Bury Dead
When an Eskimo dies his relatives
cut a hole In the back of the Igloo
and take the body out that way. seal
ing the aperture afterward so that
death will not come buck to the home.
They bury the body in a cave or rocky
place, leaving their mittens with
which the; handled the body at the
grave. They obliterate their foot
steps so that death cannot follow
them. Later they take gifts of food
and garments to the grave, again ob
literating their footsteps. In making
these Journeys the/ go by circuitous
routes, crossing a river or other body
