MERELY MUSINGS
Good behavior Is peace of mind.
Wouldn't a perfect world be horrid?
A scared man does many fool things.
A homely face gees a long wny In
politics.
Don’t listen to people who won’t
listen to you.
Truth Is stranger than fiction—In
some men’s mouths.
Say what you think when you think
of something pleasant.
One with decided opinions cun never
keep still about them.
The girl worth while Is the girl you
make smile—not luugh.
A timely sneer often saves you
from being taken to task.
Thrift Is not merely not spending
money when you want to.
Notice that the man who runs the
game generally wears the diamonds.
One of the grentest secrets of "mak
lng others happy," is to be a good
cook.
Queerer and queerer roses are pro
dueed by horticulturists, but none
more beautiful.
Sometimes you see a man so bash
ful, you want to shake him. Might
do him good, too.
About all we have left of the orig
inal cave man In un Is a determina
tion to have our way.
In the old duys you got your Ice
cream smeared Into the saucer with
a paddle and lots of It.
We wouldn't write a famous novel
If we had to address luncheon and
culture clubs afterward.
Dog fights start because one of the
dogs flinches; and man fights some
times start the same way.
A summer resort has become a suc
cess when It orders Its souvenirs man
ufactured by the 100 gross.
You never know the depth or shat
lowness of a man’s good will until you
have camped out with him for two
weeks.
It seems ns If every man should
be taught to make a speech along
with his other schooling. So many
speak so badly.
An 1877 Typewriter
We have dug up some old papers
showing that the typewriter was used
In business as early at 1877. A letter
dated January 2 of tlmt year, from
the National Life Insurance company
of Chicago and signed by J. M. Butler,
secretary. Is typed—and neatly so.
However, these first typewriters used
only caps. This concern was ahead
of Its time ns It was two years later.
In 1870, when a typewriter used by
the Pathfinder editor In the lobby of
the Capitol at Washington (when he
was secretary to his senator-father)
was such a novelty that tourists, as
well as officials all paused to see “th*
contraption" work.—Pathfinder Mag
azine.

Measures of Time
In astronomy there are three kinds
of time—sidereal, apparent solar
time and mean solar time. The
first Is used for astronomical pur
poses exclusively; the last Is the
ordinary time of civil life. Sidereal
time is the time defined by the earth
with respect to the stars, and a sld
ereal duy is the Interval between the
passage of the meridian across a star
and Its next succeeding passage across
the same star. Solar time Is defined
by the rotntion of the earth with re
spect to the sun. Since the motion
of the earth Is not uniform, solar time
Is not satisfactory for dally use, and
for this purpose mean solar time has
been devised. The mean solar day
has the average length of all the solar
days of the year.

“The Intelligence of the dog,’" says
Albert Puy.son Terhune, “is so uncuri

long ago. their first ancestors made
their compact of friendship and af

grown Into on intelligent bond as well
