Mr Chariton ,
Slß—Having learned that a
certain John H. MTntoffi, (lately
Dire&or General of certain little
matters in East-Florida) had in a
publication in your paper, declared
that Benjamin Sherod of your
county was not In's Agent, whereby
the laid MTntoffi has endeavored
to evade the final payment of a note
which I hold on Mr. Sherrod.—
For elucidation of that matter, I
beg you, with this, to give publi
cation in your paper, to the fol
lowing letter received by me from
Capt. Sherrod, as I am fully per
suaded a disinterested public will
place at once, in proper point of
view, the designs of MTntoffi, cf
pecially when it is considered from
Capt. Sherrod’s frmiiiarity with
accounts, settlements, vouchers,
Sic. &c. how difficult a talk it
might be for any person, fraudu
lently and surreptitiously , to obtain
a fertlement with him, wherein he
himfelf became bound. Upon
an examination of Mr. Sherrod’s
letter here annexed, it will be for
him, not me, to fay, whether he was
or was not the agent of MTntoffi.
Benj. Sherrod to Chs. A. TTill.
Washington , April Ist. 1814.
Dr. Sir,
After presenting my compli
ments to you, must inform you,
that Mr. J H. MTntoffi has ap
pointed myfelf his agent. Confc
quently the crop that is raised un
der your fuperintendance is to be
placed in my possession for dispo
sition; consequently all expenses
you incur during the year, on ac
count of the plantation under your
management, I will become respon
sible for.
I am, with esteem.
Benj. Sherrod.
I wiil only add, that this letter
1 was backed to be handed me by
I the favor of Mr. MTntofli, and was
; delivered to me in presence of the
\ parties, and also Mr. Nathaniel
Wilkinson.
As it is positively avowed, in
the publication above alluded to,
that the account for which Copt.
Sherrod gave me his note, (for 6GO
dollars 53 1-2 cents) is most fraud
ulent, for the fatisfaclion of my
friends, it may be necessary to ob
fever, that the purchase of four
horses, of sixty dollars value of
hogs, of bacon or beef and fait for
aSout twenty grown negroes, ex
clusive of several children, and my
! own stipulated wages, compose the
| moft prominent articles of that
i account, besides casual expences of
a plantation, such as blacksmiths
work, iron, midwifes fees, and
caffi advanced for the portage of a
number of negroes down the oco
cee to MTntoffi’s plantation, pur
suant to his requisition.
