From Bell sWeely Messenger, Aug. €?
The Ghost of Sr Andrews.
James Carnefs, a youth of about
16 years of age, was brought before
the Magiftrateat Guildhall on Fri
day upon the following charge
Lee, the officer, stated, that for 3
considerable time part the neigh
borhood of St. Andrew’s, Holborn,
was kept in a constant state of in
quietude and alarm, by the nightly
assembly of a number of the lower
orders, who fancied they had seen,
or were to fee, ‘ ’ a Ghost ;’* and so
far had their credulity been impo
sed upon, that many of them were
ready to make affidavit of the ap
pearance of this aerial form. Tho
crowd and disturbance, however,
had increased to such a degree, and
the light fingered gentry had be
come so numerous and fuccefsfu!,
that it required the utmost vigil
ance of the police to prevent jhefe
difgracefu I proceedings. OnThurf
day night, as usual, the place be
came nearly impassable and about 9
o’clock shouts of terror and alarm
suddenly burst forth on every hand,
and the cry of “ the Ghost” be
came general!. Hundreds now fled,
while others braving the superna
tural horrors of the supposed spirit,
kept their ground. The imagina
ry. Ghost, who had been observed
{kipping from one tomb stone to
another, now advanced so the gate,
and having afeended the railing,
gave fir ft a fiifteric laugh, and then
three sepulchral groans. The of
ficers, however, were not to be im
posed upon, and the pretended sha
dow was summoned in the street.
Jo this little attention was paid ;
but fufficient assistance being obtain
ed, he was dragged down and se
cured, when at length the spell was
broken,& the“airy nothing receiv
ed a local habitation and a name.”
The prisoner was dressed in a white
jacket and trowfers, and wore on
his head a white cotton cap. Up
on being called upon by the ma
gistrate for his defence, he stated
that a few evenings since he had
been induced, at the request of a
gentleman, to enter the church
yard and afeertain the truth of the
story refpeding the ghost. For
this, being liberally paid, he accept
ed the proposal, and soon afeerain
ed that the object of ail the curioT.
ity and terror which had prevailed
was nothing more than a tomb
stone, upon which the moon had
fljone for several nights ! He was
himfelf then induced to “ keep up
the joke, more, however, with a
view to undeceive, than to impose
upon the credulous multitude
The father of the youth, a moft res
pectable man, appeared on the be
half his son, and undertook to guar
antee his future condud. Wirfi
this promise, & a suitable warning, *
the niagiftrate difeharged him.
