Gannett pic tured the Supremt Court as the nation’s salvation from dictatorship today as he took the stump for Borah of Idaho. U. swim meet saw three more new records established. The great women’s relay team of the Women’s Swimming Associa tion of New York clipped 8 and 8-10 seconds off the world record last night in winning the 00 yard wo. men’s medley relay. The new re cord is 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Johnny Higgins, of Providence, Rhode Island, established a new world record in the 220 yard men’s breast stroke swim. Johnny swam the distance in 2 minutes, 39 and 3-10 seconds. The former world re cord held by Leonard Spence of the New York A. C_, was 2 minutes 43 and 5-10 seconds. In the women’s 220 yard free style race, Mary Lou Petty, of Seat tle, established a new world record when she won the race in 2 min utes, 34 and 2-10 seconds. The form, er record was 2 minutes, 34 and 8-10 seconds, held by Helene Mad ison. Jack Medica, of Seattle, won the men’s 220 yaru —style race and the New Y .rk A. C. ter-i won the men’s 400 yard relay. Dick Degner, of Detroit, success fully defended high board div ing championship. Jack Medica also held his 500 yard free style championship. Johnny Maclonis of Yale Univer sity was second. Medica’s time was 5 minutes and 5-10 seconds. Mrs. Eleanor Holm set a new world’s record winning the women’s 100 yard backstroke race in the National A. A. U. Swimming Meet. Eleanor swam the distance in 1 minute, 8 and 4.10 seconds to low er her former world record by 1.2 seconds. NAVY WINNER IN RIFLE CONTESTS ANNAPOLIS, Md., April 4 (TP) —Navy’s marksmen won the Inter collegiate Small Bore Rifle Shoot ing Championships today with a total score of 1364 points. PHELPS PAYS VISIT TO WASHINGTON WASHINGTON, April 4 (TP) The navy’s brand new destroyer, the U. S. S. Phelps, made its first official call at the National Capital today. The 1,850-ton type destroyer is the first of its kind completed under the navy’s building program. She is commanded by Commander Al bert Rooks. The Phelps will remain here 10 days, then proceed Ij Texas, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and back to Newport, Rhode Island, where she was commissioned in February. COTTON USED IN RUNWAYS ATLANTA, Ga., April 4—(GPS)— Dixie’s main money crop—cotton has found a new use. according to reports received here. The latest test is to use cotton for automobile high ways and airplane runways. The most recent development for the use of the fleecy white substance at An niston, Ala., is for the construction of a runway at the airport at Fort McClellan rrmy station. TOKIO, April 4 (TP)—The Jap anese Naval Minister Admiral Na gano indicated today that Japan might start a naval building race Admiral Nagano declared that since withdrew from the re cent London Naval Conference she has become a free and independent country. Now, said Nagano, Japan can build up her naval defenses. He hinted that the navy would make demand big appropriations to strengthen her fleets of battleships Nagano, as head of the Japanese delegation to London withdrew from the Naval Conference when Britain and France refused to give Japan naval parity. Nagano return ed to Tokio and was made Naval Minister after the uprising of the army rebels. FARM PUBLICITY MOVE FAVORED Senate Group Would Make Public Beneficiaries Os Triple-A. WASHINGTON, April 4 (TP)— The Senate Agriculture Committee today favorable repeated the Van denburg resolution which calls for publication of the names of farm ers who reecived more than SIO,OOO in yearly AAA payments. Apparently the administration did not oppose the measure. At the suggestion of Secretary Wal lace, the committee cut the benefit figure from SIO,OOO to SI,OOO. The resolution was eponsored by the Republican Senato rVandenburg of Michigan. Thfe Senate committee also ap proved the Smith Cotton Resolu tion permitting borrowers under the government loan program to take back their cotton. The total amount which could be repossessed up to September 1 would be 750,000 bales at a fixed price of 11*4 cents a pound.
