NORTH CAROLINA YOUTH
TO PACE COURT HERE
ON AUTO THEFT CHARGE
The details of a police hunt
which closed with half the citizenry
of Port Wentworth turning out to
lend their aid will be aired in police
court tomorrow morning when
youthful C. L. Riley of Durham. N.
C., faces Recorder Mercer Jordan
on a carge of laceny of an auto.
The chase began after a report
made by Mrs. Sam Ross that her
automobile had been stolen from
in front of the home of Mrs. J. F.
Gleason at Fortieth and Reynolds
street. Both city and county officers
pursued two men later seen driving
the missing car. The alleged thieves
took to the woods when their car
was wrecked at Port Wentworth
Later Riley sauntered up to a Port
Wentworth filling station and gave
himself up
U. S. STUDENT GROUP

sor of modern languages at the uni
versity, will head the student group
whclh will stour Francs during the
coming summer. The students will
do their own driving and cooking and
expect to camp in village squares,
tourist camps and on battlefields dur
ing their long stay abroad.
When they visit university towns,
the students will attend lectures by
French professors. On the return
trip to the United States .the 11 stu
dents will take an examination
aboard ship.
MANY STRANGE TALES
OF SPEED AND FORCE
ARE TOLD OF TORNADO
MOBILE, Ala., April 21 (TP).—
The string of tornadoes which have
whipped through the South with
such devastating effects, have left
many strange tales of the speed and
strength of the wind.
Tupelo and Gainesville were ravag
ed by a force estimated as traveling
180 miles per hour. Checks and pa
pers with Gainesville datelines were
found in South Carolina, more than
60 miles away. The body of one vic
time was discovered in a florist’s
greenhouse, a half mile from where
he was standing when the storm
struck.
The vicious attacks of the ele
ments recalled a similar series of
metrological disasters to Weather
man Frank T. Cole of Mobile. He
tells of the time in 1924 when he
was sent to Andereon, S. C., to make
an investigation for purpose of rec
ords. Among other things he had to
determine the speed of the wind that
whipped up a street car full of peo
ple, carried it some little distance,
and deposited it several blocks away
A page full of calculations caused
Cole to report that the “breeze” was
traveling approximately 300 miles an
hour.
