Charlie Chaplin in "Modern Times,” released through United Artists.
Drawn by Hy Rubin.
For the first time in five years, Charlie Chaplin offers the
movie world a new picture —“Modern Times.’’ It will be at
the Savannah Theater today and for the rest of the week. Paul
ette Goddard is starred with him.
Charlie Chaplin, the familiar little
clown with the baggy trousers, the
walking cane and the wistful smile,
is back again to enchant the hearts
of both old and y:ung for an entire
week at the Savannah Theater. Be
ginning today, the film genlvs w®

latest picture, "Modern Times.’’
The story centers around a pathetic

KIND-HEARTED KUTH
LOSES HIS PATIENCE,
CAT PAYS PENALTY
BAY VILLAGE, Ohio, April 27
(TP). —Martin Kuth prides himself
on being kind hearted to animals—
but he says there are limits to his pa
tience.
He was awakened at night by the
yowling of a cat whch was caught
on the porch of hs roof. He climbed
out a window to rescue the feline.
Then he slipped and fell 15 feet, into
a flower bed.
Kuth was mere angry than hurt.
He hobbled around to his kitohen.
Lo and behold, there was the cat,
rubbing itself against the leg of a
chair and meowing like a deh of wild
animals. It was too much for the i
kind-hearted hou-eholder Martin
Kuth.
He picked up the kitty, opened a
window, heaved It out —’and went |
back to bed spluttering and snorting, ‘
OHIO BUTCHiiR FINDS
LADY LUCK FICKLE
CLEVELAND, Ohio. April 27
(TP) —Butcher Casimir Radecki I
thought he had bad luck recently
when gamblers fleeced him of $6,- I
000. As a matter of fact, though,
' the butcher’s troubles had only be
gun.
First, the gambling losses forced
Radecki into bankruptcy. He lost
, his shop. The butcher decided then p
. that bad luck had done her work,
i So Radecki sued a gambling syndi
• cate to recover his $6,000.
[ Bad luck dogged Radecki’s steps
during the lawsuit. Finally, his law-
1 yers settled the case out of court *
for $250. That seemed pretty small.
Today Radecki had to hand over
the $250 and add $175 to pay a
judgment for lawyers fees during
the case. Now the ex-butcher is.
wondering "Whether Lady Luck has
any more evils in store for him.
ROADS OF COTTON
MONTGOMERY, Ala., April 27
(TP)—The Alabama Highway De
partment is preparing to pave 150
miles of highway using cotton bat
ting to reinforce the cement and
aid in holding the layers of con
crete together.
The federal government has. al- .
lotted $1,300,000 to finance the ex
periment in Alabama. Tests al
ready made in South Carolina
show that the new system although
expensive is both feasible and
practical. All that remains is to
see if the added expense is -justi
fiable. Cotton growers over the
south are looking to the experi
ment as a possible new market for
their goods.
