CHARGES PENSION PLAN A “RACKET”
Representative Hoffman and Mrs. Juanita H. Jackson
Representative Clare E. Hoffman of Michigan, one of the
members of the congressional committee investigating the Town
send old age pension plan, is pictured above going over evidence
with Mrs. Juanita H. Jackscn of Jackson, Mich., during his one
man investigation of the plan at Battle Creek. Mrs. Jackson, a
former officer of a Michigan Townsend Club, together with Rev.
David B. Moore of Traverse City, testified at the hearing that
they deserted the Townsend group because they were convinced
it was “a mcney racket.*' Mrs. Jackson, in describing conversa
tions she had with Dr. Francis E. Townsend, founder of the plan,
in January, 1935, said that <‘all he could talk about was money.’*

Mrs. Sarah F. Tooley, 96,'Valley
City, N. D., is one of the few re
maining Civil war nurses. She
nursed the soldiers for two years
in an old warehouse which served
as an army hospital somewhere
j on the border between Texas
and Arkansas, where she went In
the summer of 1863 to search for
her husband, Joseph, whom she
had been informed was sick with
jaundice and sunstroke. The
Tooleys went to North Dakota in
the 70’a, when the west .was
opened for settlement, j

Seized in Chicago with her
husband, Jack Becker, and four
others as suspects in a jewelry
store holdup gang, to which
the slaying of an Indianapolis
officer is laid, Mrs. Laura Beck
er, above, was held by police.
Among those arrested was Al
fred Brady, reputed ringleader
of the gang, who police said
first confessed to and then
repudiated his confession to the
robberies and the slaying.

has been appointed chairman of a
new project, “Peace and Party
Platforms", which is being spon
sored by the National Peace Con
ference, a group representing 33
peace organizations in the United
States. The program originated
with the National Committee on
the Cause and Cure of War, with
which Mrs. Beggs is closely asso
ciated, and plans to show the
voters in a new way how to un
derstand the relations between
world peace and political plat
forms.

The petition of W. P. Melton, of
Fulton County. Georgia, and B. R.
Bradford, of Chatham County, Geor
gia, respectfully shows:
1. That they desire, on behalf of
themselves and of such other persons
a,s may become associated them,
to be incorporated under the name
and style of Air-Cooled Tire Com
pany. ,
2. The object of their association is
pecuniary gain and profit to the
shareholders.
3. The particular business to be car
ried on by said corporation will be:
(a) To own, conduct and operate
automobile service stations and or
filling stations.
(b) To buy, sell and generally deal
in, at retail, gasoline, greases and
oils, batteries, pneumatic tires and
tubes, accessories and supplies, either
for its own account or for the ac
count of others, on commission, con
signment, or otherwise; and to gen
erally deal in all kinds of merchan
dise and supplies necessary and prop
er to carry on the business common
ly known as an automobile service
or filling station.
(c) To repair tires and tubes and
batteries and generally service auto
mobiles.
(d) To carry on any business col
lateral or Incidental to any of the
foregoing, and to do all and every
thing necessary, suitable and conveni
ent or proper, for the accomplish
ment of any of the purposes, or the
attainment of any one or more of the
objects herein enumerated, or Inci
dent to any of the powers herein
named, or which shall at any time
appear to be legitimately conducive
thereto or in furtherance thereof.
4. Petitioners pray that said cor
poration be vested with all the rights,
powers and privileges incident to cor
porations of this character under the
laws of Georgia, including the right
to sue and be sued, to have and use
a common seal to make by-laws, bind
ing on its stockholders, and to pur
chase, hold, lease, sell, use and other
wise enjoy such property, real or per
sonal, as is necessary to the purpose
of their organization, and to own
stock in other corporations, and to do
all such acts as are necesary for the
legitimate execution of this purpose,
and for the carrying on erf the busi
ness, and for the carrying out of the
objects of said corporation.
a Petitioners further pray that said
corporation be authorized and em
powered to borrow money, to make
and issue promissory notes, bills of
exchange, bonds, debentures and ob
ligations, and evidences of indebted
ness of all kind, and to secure the
payment thereof by mortgage, pledge,
deed of trust, deed to secure debt, or
in such ether manner as may be
deemed advantageous and proper.
5. The minimum capital stock to be
employed by said corporation shall be
the sum of One Thousand ($1,000.00)
Dolars, all of which is actually paid
in. The said stock is divided into
shares of the pax value of One Hun
dred ($100.00) Dollars each. Peti
tioners pray, however, that said cor
poration be authorized, in the discre
tion of its directors, when and as
they may deem expedient, to Increase
said capital stock to an amount not
exceeding Fifty Thousand ($50,000.00)

crease the same, when and as the di
rectors may deem expedient, to an
amount not less than One Thousand -*>
($1,000.00) Dollars.
6. Petitioners further pray that
said corporation be authorized to re
ceive in payment for Its capital stock
real and personal property, and prop
erty rights, money, patents, trade
marks, formula or other considera
tion satisfactory td its directors.
7. The principal place of business
of said corporation shall-be at Si
vannah, Chatham County, Georgia. *
Petitioners pray, however, £SMT

other places of business, offices, agen
cies and agents at other places, with
in cr without the State of Georgia.
8. Petitioners further pray that
said corporation be chartered for a
period of twenty (20) years, with the
right to renew' its charter at the ex
piration of said period.
Wherefore, petitioners pray that
they and their associates be incor
porated under the name, for the ob
jects, purposes and length of time,
and with the rights, powers and privi
leges hereinabove set forth.
