NATURALJGUSHER’
SOVIET REPUBLIC SCENE
OF UNUSUAL PHE-
NOMENA
MOSCOW June 2 (TP)—Soviet oil
drilling expert* clustered around a
drill at Kerguez today and scratched
thfir head* glumly.
For the fourth time within a few
hours, the diamond bit of the huge
drill had snapped off, far below the
surface of the ground. And for the
fourth time, laborious efforts to re
cover the bit were in progress while
workmen p'rspired, cursed and blamed
the experts for their troubles.
"One more try," said the expert in
charge. "If the well doesn’t blow this
time, we’ll call the whole thing off."
The “one more try" never was
made. Hardly had the chief expert
got the words out before there was
a rumbling roar. Whirling, the aston
ished oil drillers saw the earth some
quarter of a mile away buckle and
crack. There was a blast, and a col
umn of oil shot 100 feet in the air.
The experts pronounc'd the phe
nomena a natural oil gusher. They es
timate the flow at 8,000 tons a day.
Hints on Etiquette
A child should not be served his
dessert in advance of other guests.
He should never be permitted to quit
his place before everyone else is
through.

oldest if not the oldest Republican
newspaper in the country, came out
today in favor of the nomination of
a coalition ticket at the 0.0. P.,
Cleveland convention.
In a front page editorial, the Her

"We ask first,” the editorial con
