TO BE SURVEYED
SECRETARY OF LABOR
ASKS INVESTIGATION
OF VESSELS
NEW YORK, June 4 (TP)—A
joint labor department and commerce
department survey of wemen's living
conditions aboard American ships
may be the result of Secretary of
Labor Perkins' visit to the British
liner “Queen Mary.”
Mbs Perkins centered her insnec
tion tour of the huge liner on a visit
to the crew quarters. After being
shown the steps which the builders
of the new ship had taken to Insure
comfort for the “Queen Mary's’’ crew,
the labor secretary suggested a joint
departmental investigation.
“I intend to ask Secretary of Com
merce Roper to join with me in mak
ing a survey of crew quarters on
American vessels,” Secretary Perkins
said. “This does not necessarily mean
that we shall ask new legislation,
rather, the survey would be helpful
in furnishing American delegates to
the international martime labor com
mittee meeting at Geneva with con
crete suggestions regarding needed im
provements.”

“CHUTES” FAIL OPEN
AS PLANE CRASHES
ROME, June 4 (TP) —The five-man
crew of an Italian bombing plane
went over the side of their ship to
day when the lumbering bomber went
out of control in the midst of a vio
lent thunder storm.
The big plane was over the Ligur
ian Appennine Mountains when the
storm crashed down around it. The
pilot screamed a warning to other
members of the crew.
All five abandoned ship as the
bomber plunged towards the rocky
cliffs below. Three parachutes failed
to open. Only two men reached the
ground alive.

BRIDGE CLOSED
SHIMMYING SPAN WILL NO
LONGER SHAKE TRAF
FIC ON IT
CLINTON. Mass., June 4 (TP).—
Selectionmen at Clinton have come
to the conclusion that while patience
may be a virtuet, there is a limit to
all things.
Therefore, says Clerk John Kelley
of the board, the famous “shimmying
bridge’ 'at Clinton will be closed to
traffic late this afternoon. Motor
ists on the state highway, which
runs between Lowel and Worcester,
will be detoumed over dirt roads for
a distance of fully a mile.
The “shimmying bridge” is sort of
an orphan. For a dozen years offi
cials have held conferences on mak
ing the structure more stable. In
these, the Metropolitan state commis
sion, the Boston and Maine railroad,
the state, county and town have
tried to thrash the matter out. But
none would claim responsibility for
the bridge or for its erratic behavior
while traffic was crossing it.
Now, say the selectmen, the bridge
is going to be closed and kept closed.

Where Else Can
As Much Be Had
For So Little Money?
As in INDUSTRIAL CITY GARDENS, “The Salaried Man’s Paradise,” where you may acquire not a
city lot but a little country estate of one to twenty acres, or more, of fertile, well-drained land, on which
we will build, and sell to you on terms like rent, a lovely frame or brick bungalow, with modern bath,
running water, electric lights, telephone and street car facilities. On this property, you may not only
enjoy city conveniences but all country advantages, in that you may have a profusion of flowers, an
abundance of vegetables, fruits, poultry, a pony for your boy, your shooting dogs, etc., with the city
only five minutes away.
Go out and see for yourself that it is not only a pleasant place to live, but a safe, sound and profitable
place in which to invest, as the three hundred odd happy, thrifty, prosperous residents in INDUSTRIAL
CITY GARDENS will testify.
Also, in SILK HOPE FARMS (shortly to be off ere 1 to the public), you may acquire, on or off the
concrete, one to one hundred acres of as fine land as is to be found in the entire country; yet, only three
miles from the city limits of Savannah, on terms as low as $5.00 cash and $5.00 per tract per month,
with NO interest, NO taxes, and your life insured for the first three years. When you will have paid
in as much as S3OO, we will either build for you or lend you the money with which to build a lovely
frame or brick bungalow, with city conveniences, where all the joys of country life and pleasures of
home ownership may be had, and where you may have the satisfaction of knowing that you can make a
good living at home on your own land should you ev6r quit or lose your job.
When you will have acquired and paid for such a lovely place, you may justly swell up with pride in
that you invested your savings and the money you were paying for rent in such a plsce instead of squan
dering it.
