NO TIME LIMIT
ON TURTLE DERBY
BALTIMORE. June 5 (TP).—Pul
ses beat faster and temperatures rose
with each tick of the clock around
Johns Hopkins hospital this morning.
Today is the day of the sixth an
nual Hopkins turtle derby—a breath
taking sporting event which the hos
pital physician claim brings toge*.ier
some of the fastest turtles in the
world.
Entrants in the 38 foot sprint will
include the defending champion, a
British turtle that bears the name
“ ‘Arf and ’Arf.” The champion
streaked down the course in the rec
ord breaking time of 37 minutes and
four-fifths of a second in last year’s
race and is out to break his own rec
ord today.
“ ’Arf and ’Arm” will have to do
some tall stepping to hold his hon
ors. Determined to take the laurels
from their shell-backed brothers are
a dozen other turtle thoroughbreds,
including several other Bri< h tur
tles which—according to the spon
sors of the race - arrived on the
"Queen Mary.”
NEW YORK JURIST
SPEAKS FOR ETHIOPIA
WASHINGTON, June 5 (TP)—A
letter from a New York Supreme
Court judge urging American recog
nition of Ethiopia as an Italian pos
session, lies on President Roosevelts
desk today.
Author of the note in Judge Salva
tore A. Cotillo of the New York Su
preme bench. Judge Cotillo, in his
letter to the President, said :
"Neutrality requires that we recog
nize Italy’s claim over Ethiopia. To
refuse is to be un-neutral.”

VANDENBERG BOOSTED
FOR G. 0. P. NOMINATION
LANSING, Mteh.. June 5 (TP)—
conservative Democrats see a boost
for Senator Vandenberg in former
Governor William Comstook’s deci
sion to visit the national Republican
convention.
The former Democratic governor
insists he is going to Cleveland only
as aii observer. Other anti New Deal
Democrat* in Michigan, however,
have urged him to boost their junior
senator for the presidential nomina
tion. They say Comstock might swing
the aliment with the point that con
servative Democrats in Michigan and
other states would back Vandenberg
if his name were placed on the G.
O. P. ticket.
AGRICULTURAL PLANK
AIM OF CONVENTION
CHICAGO, June 5 (TP)—Republic
an leaders watched with interest as

Political observers predicted the

plank to offer the national Republic
an convention in Cleveland. Federa
tion President Earl Smith made no
denials to the rumors.
Said Smith: "No doubt the subject
will be taken up. If a statement of
the position of the federation is drawn
up. however, it will be presented to
both the Republican and Democratic
conventions.”

CAPONE NURSES JAW
AS RESULT OF FIGHT
SAN FRANCISCO, June 5 (TP).—
Al Capone is nursing a bruised jaw
today. Capone, one-time king of
Chicago’s vnderw'orld, is reported to
have come out second best in a fist
fight which took place in gloomy
Alcatraz prison.
The winner of the one-punch fight
was Harmon Waley, confessed kid
naper of little George Weyerhaeuser
of Tacoma, Washington. Whaley, ac
cording to reports which leaked out
through the famous "grapevine”
poked Scarface Al just once when
Capone spoke of him as a "c|rty
baby snatcher.” The one punch was
enough for Capone. Pudgy Al went
over backwards and stayed there.
Both men unofficially were report
ed to have been put in solitary con
finement for their little get-together.
A FEW TIPS
Do it! Don't be absurdly proud and
independent. Ask youir worst competi
tor to lunch. Talk things over. It
can’t do any harm. It ma., help. Who
knows?
cost of the house can be determined by multiply
ing the cubic contents (16,804 cubic feet) by 30
cents, as the estimate of cost was set at 30 cents
per cubic foot. The house contains six rooms and
bath, with garage attached.
