FALLACY THAT RIGHT HAND PAGES READ MOST “IS THE BUNK” NEW YORK, June 12 (TP)—The popular belief that most people do their magazine reading from the right-hand side has been exploded, says an advertising author, Harold J. Rudolph. He claims that his stuies show magazine advertisements appearing on left-hand pages, bring as many or more replies than those of the right-hand variety Most advertisers, in the belief that the average reader was "right-hand ed”, so to speak, wanted their mes sages to appear on that side of per iodicals. Rudolph based his conclusion on a coupon response He found that from some 350,000 coupons received by ad evrtisers tnere were slightly more clipped from left-hand page ads than from those appearing on the right side. WATER THREATENED MARYLAND DROUGHT SALISBURY, Md., June 12 (TP)— The Southern drouth is threatening Salisbury with a shortage of water. Lack of rain and torrid heat has forced residents to draw large amounts of water from reservoirs for drinking and garden purposes. The result, city engineers say, is that a million and a half gallons of water is being drained daily from the re servioirs and the city’s supply is threatened with depletion. Residents have been asked to bud get the water they use on their gar dens. The drouth has shriveled crops throughout the South. J., June 12.—New Jersey lawmakers may count safety on the collection of approximately $15,000,000 in taxes levied on the es tate of the late Dr. John T. Dor rance, according to an opinion by David T. Wllentz, attorney general, before the legislature today. This money, when collected, will be used for taking the state budget out of the red, and, it is held, will make It unnecesary to levy new taxes for un employed relief an dother emergency expenditures. Estimates placed the appropriation bill the legislature must pass at about $37,441,74i6 in addition to which the highway department will require about $36,400,594, the state’s social security program about $4,500,- 567 and children’s aid and old-age pensions about $500,000 for the cur rent quarter <of the present fiscal year. Receipts plus the Dorrance estate levy are expected to be auffi* cient to meet all these requirements. Attorneys for the estate have for nearly five years contested the right of New Jersey to collect these taxes, the original levy having been for $12,500,000. Interest and penalties for non-payment have increased tills sum by nearly $3,000,000. Burlington county is antitied to five per cent of the Dorrance levy be cause his home was there. The Dor rance estate already has paid estate taxes to Pennsylvania. the porter and demanded: ‘‘Did you tell anybody on the train we were married?" “No sir,” said the dusky porter, “I told ’em you all was just good friends.” SAVANNAH DAILY TIMES PHONE 6183
