Enrollment Grows
In Youth Section
Peace Campaign
PHILADELPHIA, June 16.—From
colleges all over the country the head
quarter# staff of the Youth Section
of the Emergency Peace Campaign is
receiving reports of active interest in
the summer plans of its Emergency
Peace Volunteers. Hundreds of young
people have applied for enrollment
already, and a number of them have
been offered the financial support of
college and other groups in providing
the half of their expenses in the field
which they are expected to pay them
selves.
One example of such support on a
large scale Is reported from the Uni
versity of West Virginia at Morgan

A mimeographed sheet has been
prepared and distributed to all stu
dents, outlining the stresses being ex
perienced in the world today which
might lead to conflicts, and urging
more general interest in them, their
causes and their cure.
“If the people, sincerely desiring
peace as they do,” says this sheet,
“are shown the paths by which
America was led and is being led into
war, and if their voice is given ex
pression and guidance by trained lead
ers, ( then it yet may nob be too late.
“And that is where the several
hundred students from the nation’s
leading colleges and universities come
into the picture,” it continues.
TROUBLES I
OF WORLD
NOT NEW‘
4,000 YEARS AGO PEOPLE#
WERE SURE IT WAS
COMING TO END
By VIRGINIA LEE
"OUR EARTH is degenerate in
these latter days; there are signs that
the world is speedily coming to an
end; bribery and corruption are com
mon; children no longer obey their
parents; every man wants to write
a book, and the end of the world
is evidently approaching.”
Wouldn't you think these words
were written about 1936? Well, they
were not. According to Dr. Fred
erick C. Ferry, president of Hamilton
college, they were written in the year
2800 B. C. on an Assyrian tablet.
That war succeeds war, and there
are many indications that civilization
will be completely destroyed by con
flicts in which all toe nations of the
earth take part, would doubtless also
be true of that faraway day, as it is
of this.
We have advanced in science. We
now skim through the water, over the
earth and in the sky in ways that
were not dreamed of in those days,
and the common man —once a slave
—has a good deal more liberty and
many more comforts than he had
then, in spite of his still unsatisfac
tory position in the world, but hat
reds, Injustices, violence and pas
sion seem as rampant now as then,
over 4,000 years ago. Maybe they are
not; possibly we have progressed in
those fields, too, and are more moral
than in ancient times, but we are so
fl»r from being “good”, that we can
not help being discouraged.

BOBBIE is another young girl who
has trouble at home. She has a step
father who casts slurs on her boy
friend, who is of a different nation
ality than herself. Your stepfather
doesn’t forbid you to go with the boy,
I gather, Bobbie, so I’d keep up the
friendship. I think the slurs on his
nationality are very unjust, and in
tolerant—very bad stuff. Don’t let
yourself get that way. But get home
in good time at night. I think you
should be allowed to go to parties
occasionally, but not to stay out so
late that your mother worries. Good
luck to you, Bobbie.
There are about 1,000,000 square
miles of lake and river surface in the
entire world, and nearly 2,000,000
square miles of Islands in the seas.
HIS ANSIVER
A none-too-well-prepared applicant
for a civil service appointment found
the following question on his exami
nation paper: “How near is the moon
to the earth?”
He replied: “Not near enough to
bother me in my work, if I get this
job.”

| Short Dixie Rout
Urged By League
I WOODRUFF. S. C., June 16.—Or
i ganization of the Anderson-Woodruff-
York Highway League, has been cre
ated by South Carolinians for the
promotion of a direct safety highway
from Norfolk. Va., to Houston, Texas.
The league constitutes the initial unit
of a contemplated Southern Short-
Way Association to be composed of
similar leagues in eight states
The group sponsors the immediate
routing and survey of new road links
from the Saluda river bridge on
South Carolina Highway No. 247 east
of Belton via Fork Shoals, thence
west of Owings, crossing the Enoree
river over prseent Woodruf, a dis
tance of approximately 20 miles;
thence from Woodruff passing near
Glenn Springs directly to Hickory
Grove, a distance of about 40 miles.
There the new route would connect
with South Carolina Highway No. 5
to York and over Soutl) Carolina
Highway No. 163 and North Carolina
Highway No. 49 to Charlotte. The
highway from Hickory Grove to Char
lotte already is paved.
It 4s estimated that this new short
cut across South Carolina would
eliminate about 30 miles between An
derson and York, and about 22
miles between Anderson and Char
lotte. In addition, it would provide an
alternate route from Charlotte via
York connecting South Carolina
Highway No. 9 to Spartanburg and
Greenville. Furthermore, it would con
nect an alternate and shorter route
from Anderson to Gaffney, saving
about eight and nine miles, respec
tively.
This new arrangement would pro
vide key links in the proposed South
ern Short-Way which would follow a
straight line between Norfolk, Va.,
and Baton Rouge, La., a distance of
over 100 miles. Since the route would
follow a straight line as nearly as
possible, no present or future route
could be shorter, it was pointed out.
It would cross and connect most
north-south United States highways
in the South and would cross ma
jor rivers at existing crossings.
PENSION LEADER HAPPY
OVER MAINE ELECTION
CHICAGO, June 16 (TP)—Dr.
Francis Townsend told Transradio
Press today that he is highly pleased
with the showings made by Town
send Club candidates in the Maine
primaries.
In a joint statement with his lieu
tenant, Gerald Smith, Dr. Townsend
claimed two victories in three states
in the Maine congressional races. The
chief of the S2OO-A-Month Pension
Organization emphatically denied
newspaper reports thf, a Townsend
candidate was overwhelmed in the
race for the nomination for governor.
Said Townsend: “We endorsed no
gubernatorial candidate.”
Townsend added: “If we do as well
in the national field, we'll be satisfied.
As Maine goes, so goes the nation.”
HINTS MAKE
LIFE HARD
FOR WOMAN
HUSBAND’S SUSPICIOUS,
SO WIFE THREATENS
TO LEAVE
By VIRGINIA LEE
WHO IS more hateful and does
more mischief than a liar and tale
bearer? The person who never tells
tales right out or says a single thing
against another person, but who hints.
“Better watch your wife,” he says,
grinning. “Why?” you ask. “I’ll never
tell,” or “Oh, nothing,” says he,
laughing gaily, “only watch.”
Isn’t that beastly? Nothing definite,
you see, only a hint that Friend Wife
isnt all she should be .Often the hint
er thinks he's being funny, but I can
tell him his sense of humor is warp
ed, and tragedy is likely to follow
his mean insinuations.
A Real Man would give such a sug
gested a good healthy punch and tell
him he’d better mind what he says.
But humans are poor, weak creatures,
and some of them think the hinter
really knows something against the
person he hints about, and even in
the*’ mind of the one who “smacks
him down”, a little seed may be plant
ed that may, given a good healthy
chance, blossom into a strong and
troublesome weed.
Such is the case with a woman who
writes me and asks my advice. She
and her husband and children would
be happy, she says, except that one
of those insinuating beasts toid the
husband he had better look out for
his wife. And the poor sap of a hus
band, although he knows this man
is a trouble maker, can't trust his
wife and she, poor girl, although she
knows herself to be innocent of any
wrong, is on the verge of leaving him
because his jealous suspicions make
life miserable for her.
He has his moments of reason when
he promises he will not distrust her,
and then he helps her with the house
work and they are happy with the
babies. But then, I suppose he thinks
over what the man might mean, and
as time goes on, he gets worse and
worse, his wife says.
Mrs. M. E. F.: You certainly pick
ed a weak brother for a husband,
my dear. If he had any manhood
about him he would tell that man if
he ever said anything like that about
his wife again he would punch his
head, and mean it. How a man who
loves his wife can let another even
hint that she isn't all she should be
is a mystery to me, especially as he
knows from past experience that this
man is a mischief maker.*
Your life, from what you tell me,
is an open book, and I think if this
thing goes on I would advise you to
tell your father about the whole thing
and let him settle with your husband
and the other fellow, too. He, at least,
would stand up for his girl. Don't
break up your home if you can help
It. But try to have it very definitely
understood that you will not stand
much more nonsense of that kind.
Sun hats are amusing, with large
brims ,tiny cone-shaped crowns, or
Chinese effects without crowns. They
usually are in gay-colored straw, with
ribbons that tie under the back of
the head. There also are some fabric
beach hats ith ide brims, but no
crowns.
