That’s what it amounts to with 85 men renovating Independence hall, 250 more sprucing up city hall, 1600 repaving half a dozen main streets, and a couple of thousand more fix ing up convention hall and generally lifting the face of this old Quaker City. Except they have TULSA FIRE DEPARTMENT SAVES NEARBY VILLAGE , CHELSEA, Okla., June 19 (TP) — Fire apparatus from Tulsa rushed to Chelsea today to save the village from total destruction. A mysterious fire broke out in .a Chelsea drug store. In a few min utes, it had spread to an adjoining , building. Both buildings were des troyed with an estimated $60,000 loss. The village fire company appealed to Tulsa when it saw the flames would sweep the residential section if they were not controlled immediately. It’s all very complicated. But poli tics are that way in Philadelphia. Wilson ws elected city controller as a Democrat and then at the last elec tion ran as a Republican, but he couldn't change his registration with outswearing he had voted for a ma jority of Republican candidates at the previous election. That’s the law, and since Wilson doesn't swear, nothing could be done about it. Besides attempting to delight the eye of the delegates, the inner man also is being considrd. PAGE ELEVEN SCIENTISTS AGOG AT SOLAR ECLIPSE ; PHENOMENA RECORDED THROUGHOUT WORLD BY USE OF MOVIES LONDON, June 19 (TP).—Astron omers from all parts of the world clustered around telescopes in Tur key. Asia Minor and Russia today to , view a complete eclipse of the sun. Forty scientific expeditions, Man ning field observatories set up along a path which stretched from the sea of Japan to the Mediterranean, ob served t he heavenly phenomena with the aid of the most modern astrono mical apparatus in the world. Motion picture cameras ground out miles of film. Special cameras, which changed position every second of the eclipse, pointed their lenses skyward as the shadow of the earth darkened the fiery globe above. Bal loons, which bore instruments de signed to check climatic reactions to the eclipse, soared high above the earth, along the path of the pheno mena. Among the expeditions which traveled thousands of miles to be on hand for today’s eclipse was a group representing Harvard University and the Masachusetts Institute of Tech nology. The Harvard-M. I. T. ex pedition, (headed by Dr. Donald IJ; Menzel, set up its field observatory at Ak-Bulak, Russia, where the total eclipse occurred at 9:15 a.m., Russian time, or 12:15 a.m. New York time. LOCAL FIRM AWARDED CHARLESTON CONTRACT An important air-conditioning con tract, that of installing the air-con ditioning equipment for the Lerner’s store, in Charleston, has just been awarded the Southern Specialty and Fixture Company, local Westinghouse Air-conditioning representatives. The new equipment will be a 25 horse power plant, capable of producing 22 tons of refrigeration, and an all-year around conditioning unit.
