ONE MAN STRIKE
ENDS IN COURT
COMMUTER WHO PAID
COMMISSION RATE
FACES CHARGES
JAMAICA, L. 1., June 19 (TP).—
The Long Island railroad’s public ob
jector number one, Jacob Abelson, is
due to go before a Jamaica court on
disorderly conduct charges today.
Abelson is the commuter who re
fuses to pay the Long Island more
than two cents a -mile, although the
Pennsylvania railroad subsidiary
still charges three and a half cents
regardless of the Interstate Com
merce Commission’s recent fare-cut
ruling. The Long Island maintains
that it is an Intrastate line and isn’t
subject to the I. C. C. order.
Abelson won out in his one-man
revolution for several days, when
harased conductors accepted his fare
figured on a two-cent-a-mile basis.
However, a few days ago, tempers
snapped and Abelson .was tos--~d off
a Long Island train and barged
with disorderly conduct. The com
muter has filed assault charges

THE ADVANTAGE OF HIGHER
SUITS
At the same score for both sides,
with ability to win an equal number
of tricks, it is obvious that the side
having the higher suits to bld pos
sess a distinct advantage The follow
ing deal, made last evening, illustrates
this fact. Miss Esther Keech, an ex
cellent player, sat West. 1 sat South.
Our partners were of about equal
ability. I had the deal. I showed both
spades and diamonds. She showed
the two lower suits, hearts and clubs.
Each of us held six-card suits. Either
of us could make just 5-odd in either
of our suits. Neither of our partners
supported. Nothing could have been
more even, except each of my suits
outranked hers.
(Bidding went: South, 1-Spade; West
2-Hearts; South, 3-Diamonds; West,
4-Clubs; South, 4 -Diamonds, showing
partner that suits were of equal
length; West, 5-Clubs; South, 5-Dia
monds, which East doubled.
Wtest led the K of clubs. I ruffed.
I dared not lead a spade, for fear
West might ruff- I had to lead off
the Ace and Q of diamonds. East
won the second trick, and led back a
heart, which went to the Ace. I played
a low spade. Dummy’s K lost to East’s
Ace. I had to ruff a club. A low
trump went to dummy's 10, pulling
the double’s last diamond. The 8 of
spades was led and not covered. It
held the trick. Dummy’s last spade
picked up East’s last card of tha tsuit,
leaving all my cards good, and just
fulfilling the doubled contract.
Instead of doubling I think that
East should have supported his part
ner’s hearts. That would have forced
me to bid 5-Spades as West could
readily have fulfilled a s ; Hearts con
tract, losing only two trump tricks.
We will run through the play of
the cards at 5-Spades, as It may not
be obvious just how that contract
can be fulfilled. Lead the K of clubs.
South will ruff. Lead a low spade.
Put up dummy's K and East’s Ace.
Lead back a heart. South is in with
the Ace. Lead the 10 of spades, which
East must win with his J, or lose
that honor. East can win no more
tricks. Have him lead back a club.
Ruff with the 9. Lead the 7 of
spades. Overtake with dummy's 3
pulling East’s low trump. Lead the
J of diamonds, and keep leading that
suit from dummy until East's K is
trapped, and until all his diamonds
have been pulled. Spread the hand
for 5-odd.
In case South bids 5-Spades, if

East supports partner once, either in
the major or minor suit, West will
bid 6-odd, perhaps be doubled and go
down only a single trick. That will
be a great gain over losing to South.
