CENTRAL PRESS ASSOCIATION „ . t/J POPE PIUS LAUDS MOVIE CRUSADE AMERICAN LEGION OF DE CENCY PRAISED HIGHLY VATICAN CITY, July 2 (TP)— Pope Pius jjent hearty praise to Amer ica’s national legion of decency today for its crusade against questionable movie shows. The Pontiff issued an encyclical in which he said that Cath olic bishops and laymen had wno a victory in their “clean movie” drive. He said the legion has raised the moral level of Hollywood pictures without damage to the film industry itself The legion of decency was organ ized by Catholic leaders almost two years ago. It now maintains a per manent organization which provides reviews of movies as they are re leased. The pictures are graded for “general consumption,” “adult patron age”—or the legion calls them ”ob Actionable in part.” If the legion thinks the picture won’t do at all. it is “condemned.” This activity, the pope’s encyclical says, has improved the films immeasurably and has ac tually increased Catholic patronage of movie houses all over the world.
