Sally Says
About Society
SALLY SAYS ABOUT SOCIETY:
It seems quite the vogue for Savannahians to sail on the M.
V. Georgic for Europe. When the liner steamed out of New York
yesterday, Martha Stevens (Mrs. John J.) was on board. Others
who have previously sailed on
Georgic this summer, were the
Randolph Andersons and the
rv Norris Platts.
Sally predicts that no one per.
son will have a more enjoyable- f . "■■
vacation this summer than Martha,
for she is with a group of D<dph-j|Sagr
ians on a tour that has beenjEgT
planned with an itinerary
cially correlated with Delphian martha stevens
studies, as you know, Martha was the organizing president of the
local chapter here.
Martha will arrive in Southampton on the 20th, and from
there will spend four days in London, sight-seeing and visiting
Oxford and Shakespeare country. From London, she will visit
Hague, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, then a full week in
Paris.
The first week in August will find the party in Cologne,
where they will visit the Cathedral, Rhine river to Wiesbaden,
Heidelberg, from there a two-day motor tour of the Black Forest
to Lucerne and then Interlaken.
The party will then journey into Italy, visitiug the cities of
Montreux, Stresa, Milan, Venice, h*lorence, stopping a full week
in Rome, then Naples, as the grand finale; sailing from here on
the Rex, the 26th of August, arriving in New York, Septem
ber 3rd.

CAN NORTH MAKE 4 SPADES?
Successful play of a difficult hand
always is more interesting to most
than a purely double-dummy problem
hand. Today we have a hand which
was actually dealt, also perfectly
played by both North as declarer, and
by the two defenders.
Bidding went: South, 1 No Trump;
North, 2 Spades; East, 3 Hearts;
South, 3 No Trumps; North, 4 Spades,
very wisely; West doubled.
The opening lead was the K of
clubs. Not wishing to establish dum
my’s Q of clubs, the Q of Hearts was
next led, and the trick won with dum
my’s K. See how you would play the
hand from that point, against de
fenders’ best play.
Lead the 9 of spades. West can
gain nothing by covering. The 9 will
hold and East will show out. Lead
the 4. Cover with West’s 6. W-n with
declarer's 8. East will find two dis
cards of low hearts as good as any
other play.
Lead a low club from North’s hand.
East may as well win with his Ace.
The final result cannot be altered by
his refusal to take the trick. East’s
return lead of either a diamond or
club will not, however, in the least
upset what North is about to accom
plish. Only the sequence of tricks won
by declarer will be changed. Suppc,»
East leads the J of hearts, putting
dummy in with the Ace, at the sixth
trick.
Lead dummy’s last trump. Cover
with West’s 7. It is as good as any
other play to make. Declarer will
then win with his 10, and he will lead
back his last club, winning with dum
my’s Q. That will make the eighth
trick, of which he has won 6 tricks.
The remaining 5 cards held by each
player will be as shown.
Dummy is in the lead, and to go
game West must not be given more
than a singletrick. Lead dummy's
Ace and K of diamonds. All will fol
low suit. Lead a third round of dia
monds, putting West in the lead with
his third and lastdefensive trick. West
has leftonly his two spades, and he
must lead one of them. It makes no
difference which spade Westleads.
Declarer must win the last two tricks,
and he will fulfill his contract.
Mary Margaret Blackford of Okla
homa City.
