PLANE CRACK-UP
PUTS EXPEDITION
IN DIFFICULTIES
THREE AMERICAN SCIEN
TISTS IN DIRE STRAITS
BECAUSE OF CRASH
PORT MORESBY, New Guinea,
July 13 (TP). —An airplane crash to
day placed three American scientists
and their 60 Papaun bearers in dan
ger of starvation.
The Americans and the natives are
members of the Achbold expedition
which is exploring the wild reaches
of the Fly river. The expedition
planned to fly supplies to their out
posts by amphibian plane.
The supply ship cracked up today
in an attempted take-off with a
heavy load. Repairs will require
more than a week and the expedi
tion is 700 miles up the river, with
only enough supplies to last three
days.
Other planes in Port Morseby, the
nearest city, do not have enough of a
cruising range to make the trip. Re
pairs to the damaged amphibian are
under way at top speed. Even with
repair crews working on 24-hour
shifts, authorities fear the supply
plane will not be able to start up •
the river before starvation menaces
the expedition.
HEAT WAVE AIDS
TRAVEL INCREASE
WASHINGTON, July 13 (TP).—
The commerce department's weekly
report proves that even heat waves
aren’t all bad.
The department’s business survey
announced that the hot spell has
done much to increase traveling and ‘
vacationing throughout the country.
The report reveals that transpor
taion facilities were taxed to capacity
everywhere. A huge increase in the
sale of summer clothing and vacation
accessories was noted in the
survey, which is based on statistics
from 36 cities.
The report warned, however, that
the drought and the steel labor war
which is threatening may have seri
ous effects on business within the
next few weeks.

a newspaper devoted to the Ethiopian
struggle for independence. The pa- ‘
per is called the “New Times and 1

Miss Pankhurst recently finished a
biography of her mother, Mrs. Emme

The volume will be published in
America this fall. ;

Honey Digestible
Because honey is composed «o
largely of simple sugars it can be as
similated by the Ixxiy with ease. If
eaten in moderate quantities it pro
vides a very wholesome addition, to
the list ’of sweets, and may be used
in place of sugar as a modifier of
milk for infants. This is taken from
a leaflet issued by the United States
department of agriculture.
