The South mingles its sympathy with that of the North in the death of two such illustrious patriots ns Gen. W. S. Hancock and Gov. Hora tio Seymour. Both were warm friends of our lore ! laud during her dark day# of political usurpation. Hancock and McClellans funerals wore unostentatious. It was not nec e.< trv to whitewash their characters with the pomp and pageantry of uni formed processions. Macon Tele graph. We desire to be allowed the privi-, lego of recording a hearty amen to tha above paragraph. Farmers throughout the Republic of Columbia aw making extensive preparations for obeying tlm •■mu late of the law in reference to keeping up stock, which goes into effect the first of April. We me pleased to note that, so far, among neighbors the matter has created no ill feeling, us has been the case in several instances iu other counties. At no time within the past four or live years have we noticed so many of the colored population walking around upon tho public highways ap parently with nothing to do. We are reliably informed that the cause of this is a determination upon the part ■ of Cuffy to work only by tho day In some instances it in said to work very much against the farming inter cats of the county. How so many of them subsist just at this time is a question w« are not able to answer, but our opinion is that if tho law against vagrancr was < nforced n number of them would be shown something to do more profitable than loitering around. Decidedly Wrong. We have time and again referred to the practice of compromising crime us a stop calculated to work injury to any community. Constant y occa-si m presents itself to enforce the correct ness of such an opinion. Only a few days ago a negro boy living in this commurity succeeded in stealing SSO and camo very near making his es cape. We are informed that not long since, while living in another county, be was sentenced to the chain gang for some crime. From some cause, if we are correctly informed, he en listed the sympathy of fi tends and was released. He now stands charg ed with theft, )a>rhaps consoling him- ' self with the thought that some one will come to his rescue, which may be ti e case, as such has frequently been done and the law cheated of it* claim It i-oiit, irotu predecout, that the uegro ha* educated himself up to the idea that if he steals, some one will go on his bond or pay him out. The practice works incalculable inju- ry ton wfi <. comm unit, ihe thief who in thus relieved of the penalty of the law is left in the same communi ty to harm some one else Sympathy for vuieh a character, to the extent of not allowing him to pay the nrtiaHy which the law demands against him, out in the wrong direction, and tbs s mer p< ■ pl" read) the conclusion and firmly stand by it, to let the law take its coins'-against all offenders, the better fi r society and properly. — Such c! Cook, who is in the employ of the Georgia 1;,.i1i- id ss conductor, happened to i into a painful accident last week while or. duty. Mr. C. was in charge of the third train on the night sched ule. When they reached Covington, the l.voting point, Mr. Cook remained in hi i cab and was busily engaged in making out his report when he dis covered the fourth and last train in < I proximity to his cab, rendering escape absolutely inqxissible, and in u twinkling, with a crash, the engine unmanned, struck the cab, complete ly <!< nioli Ling it, and, strange to re late, Mr. Cook escaped with his life, though very painfully hurt. The en gineer on the roar train was fast asleep at the time. The wounded man returned to his home here on the next train, and attended by the skillful hands of Dr. Peeples he is rapidly improving and will soon be himself again. - - - ♦ - —— Burglar* at Work.
