CURRENT EVEN IS AS MOULDED
BY THE STATE PAPEHS.
The News of the Week Gather- ■
«•«! ami Boiled Down An
Hour With the Scribesof the
Press.
The weakly pn-ss may not ba worth
ranch to the big dailies; bul they are
worth a deal more to the people
than the huge city weeklies which
which are nothing but a rehash of
news already published in the daily
edition.- Ex.
Augiiala Chronicle: In Augusta
last week a colored man was arrested
for kiaaing n woman of his race on
the public highway without her con
gest. Recorder Dunbar called it
violation of the INth section and fined
the demonstrative lovci two dollars
and cost.
IL T Asbury, of Maxey's, who is
now sixty years old, was one of the
sufferer* from the storm which passed
through the upper portion of Grerne
county on May 1, IH7G So terrible
ami frightful was ths destruction upon
Mi. Asbury's place that he seems to
have lost all knowledge of events that
transpired before the storm. With
him all data is taken from that
time Ex.
Dalton Argus: Th# Georgia towns
that pulled their Shanghais for the
Ohio excursionists are mouthing
about the results. As a rule there is
not much business in an ordinary
excursion, and it is not a very mild
type of idiocy that would hope to sw II
men homes on the fly. The best plan
is always to show a proper hospitality
to strangers without running over
with gusli. The oxcursions are suru
to be of benefit to us.
The State Baptist Convention is to
lueet in Rome this spring, and the
conference of the Rome Baptist
church took action in the matter Sun
day by passing a resolution directing
the pastor to appoint such committees
as would bo necessary for the recep
tion and entertainment of the delega
tes. Mr. Junies A Smith will move at
otioe in the matter of reduced railroad
faro He thinks one fare for the
round trip will bo the rule.
Washington Chronicle Mr. ami
Mr*. Galie 8011, near Mt Zion church
went to preaching on Saturday, ana
left two children at home, one of them
ten or twelve years old, and the other
about two. It was a pleasant day,
and the children were t >ld not to make
any fire, but they noun forgot these
instructions. The smaller child was
playing around the tire, mid its clothes
caught. The older one found it verv
difficult to extinguish the flames. The
child was very badly burned, ami
there is little ho|»e of its recovery
Americus Recorder: Late Satur
day night, iu> the freight train coming
south on the Houtll Western Railroad
neared Andersonville, just above the
cemetery cruasing, the engine ran into
four crossties which had been placed
on the track. Two of the ties weie
displaced by the cowcatcher, and the
other two were so wedged in the cow
catcher thut in was ft mid necessary to
cut them out with an axe. Fortunato! v
the train was not thrown from the
track. It ia supposed to lx> the work

Washington Chronicle: Edgar
Dyson is in the habit, when hunting,
of letting the luuule of his gun rest
on bis foot, and all his father's cau
tions ami warnings have failed to con
vines him that this is dangerous Ou
Saturday he was at Mrs Wynns
hunting with a young friend, and
stopping to rest, bo let the muxade
rest on his foot, the gun being cocked
His finger rested on the trigger, ami
almost as soon iw he stopped the gun
was discharged, the load pausing be
tween the big toe and the one next to
it
Augusta Chronicle: Yesterday
while Mr. M J. Sullivan, who is em
ployed as a machinist at the Georgia
Chemical Work*, and a colored laborer
named M Smith, were tightening nuts
on the cylinder head, it blew off, and
the sulphuric acid was thrown in their
face and eyes. The injury is not verv
severe to either of the men. though
the effect of the acid on their evew
may preve serious The damage to
the chsmical works is not extensive,
except in liaving to shut down th e
chainlwr for a day or two. Had these
tuen been immediately over the cyl-I
inder at the time they would probable I
ha*e been blown to alums.
