Columbia Sentinel. ~i. v. baliArd. ) T J. M. ATKINSON. f I' 1 ’ 11 '""- H hi im, (1 A ran. 1. 1886. PRICE, (Mb IN ADVANCE. EDITORIAL NOTES. Th* ftv*r%’p umbrtlln wan of very little force on Monday. Elberton, Ga, in r<qg>rtc<l to bo infected with rnrul <lo'„n». The Htrikere on Jay Gonld’a rail roads have been hanging on with a firm grip. Our opinion is that imagination htw a great deal to <lo with the mad dog l>uain< nH in many instances. There ia a man in Ijouiniana who hax started his second century- hav ing celebrated his 10!st birth-day a few days ago. 'Plio beginning of March was very much like the lamb, but its departing hours resembled very much the spirit of a lion and the indications of a flood. True doctrine put forth by the Sa vannah News: "If our Southern farm ers will make sure of the hog and hominy crop, they will not have so mt.ch occasion to abuse cotton specu lators next winter." ••• One of our farmers has discovered a ‘‘remedy" for hog cholera strych nine. He gave it to one of his hogs n few data . ago and it did its work quick the hog died in a few minutes He now recommends it as dead shot in getting rid of cholera and the hog also. Preston Valentino, supposed to be the murderer of Mr Wm. Vales, at the street car stables, in Augusta, over a year ago, has been captured by Capt. E B. Purcell ami brought back to Augusta. Ho was living in Virginia at the time of his arrest. We understand ho has confessed the crime At Abbeville, S. (’ , there is a new section master on the Satimnah Val ley Railroad, who is strongly suspect ed of being John (‘offer, the murder er of Deputy Maislud J. M. Merritt, who was killed nt Lula, Ga. An eye is luting kept on him while his de scription has been sent for. There is a reward of SSOO for his arrest. Ex. ••• The Grecnesboro Home Journal comes to tiie point in the following lines: ‘‘We know of but one thing in the future that can bo predicted with certainly. We want to go on record this month of March in the present year of grace ns saying that the man who persists in the idle dream of making money by planting cotton to the exclusion of everything else will be knocking at the alms house door before he is two years older in age and experience." The Evening News says that the preliminary survey of the Augusta and Chat tarns »ga Railroad will begin this wnek. Whether the lino of the old Augusta and Elberton Railroad will bo adopted as far as it goes, has not been definitely settled. The most practicable route and that which promises the best results, will prob ably be that adopted without refer ence to any other line. Those who have the matter in charge are pro gressive business men. I'hey fare de termined the road shall be built, and admit of no such word as fail. Appling Noh s. in r. The following cases were disposes! of in Superior Court last week; State v*. Stevan Thomas—hog stealing. Verdict, guiltv ami motion for new trial. Snead for defendant, Solicitor-General for the State. State va Spencer Jones cotton stealing. Verdict, not guilty. Wil liams etui West for defendant and Solicitor-General for State State vs Jim and Gw. Evans cot ton stealing. PI M of guiltv. Fine each, to include costs. Slate vs. James Baker larecnv from house Plea of gul ltv lUI J tenced to pay a fine of s2o.’to include costa. State nu Baas Crawford assault •tc.. with intent to murder. Plea of guilty of shooting at another ami fin <sl $75 to include costa State va W. M. Ram sex Tre»- |Nun. Verdict, net guilty. Johnson and Tutt for defendant, Solicitor- 1 General for State. A number of judgments were taken and several canes settled, The only important case on the civil docket tried at thia term was that of Mary A. Bunch vs. T. D. Caswell and others. Thin case occupied the Court more than a day and resulted in a verdict for j laintiff. A motion was made fora new trial an<l it is likely the case will go to the Supreme Court. We had a heavy rain and the bridge over the creek at this place was almost torn away. It is badly damaged and needs immediate atten i tion. l/lttr fr«m 11. W Baldwin »f Wadiaon Ga- Dr W.
