The painful suffering of my eex caused by thia rule is great, and I will proceed to rea<l the letter. I have prepared, hoping you will all agree with me w hen I have finished In some of the largest dry goods houses in this city the proprietors in employing female help give the em ployees to understand that they will bo compslled to stand on their feet without a moment’s rest during the business hours in which the store is kept open Now these employers will require their female help to remain standing whether busy or not. No scats are allowed behind the coun ters for rest during idle moments From half-past seven in tlm morning until 2 o’clock, they stand up behind the counters, fearing to so much as lean on the shelves n moment for a brief rest One hour they are al lowed to rest and cat their dinners. When the hnnds show t hat I odock has strived, they are again required to resume their standing , ositioiis, not daring lobe crught in any other for five long Lours, as they would forthwith be invited by the floor walker to go to the office mid get their pay, and their places are declai ed vacant. Ladies, this is my honest convic tion. I am willing to t ike a vote either by acclamation or by ballot. Her friends rose at ones and unani mously agreed that such treatment of their sex would no longer be tolera ted. Ono of the Indies got up and recited a very pathetic story. Last summer in the l itter part of July, I was in one of the large drv goods house in this city making some mnall purchases, when the young lady who had charge of the ribbon counter fainted 'Die floor walker came up and asked what was the matter, aa several young ladies had, as soon ns the young lady fainted quit their work and come over to see that their companion did not suffer for attention. Well, two weeks Inter I was again in that large store and saw several new clerks, and just before 1 had finished my purchase one of the young ladies, who was clerking there the last time 1 wns in the store, camo tupping in. I asked her where her friends were, and she aai<l they hud nil l>een discharged for the time they lost in waiting on their companion, who fainted in the store one day when the lady was present 1 took this young lady home with me and gave her a position ns seams tress in my family, and she has been there ever since Uii» lady had no soouer completed her illustration of the cruelty these young ladies were subject to. than eeveral other equally aa annoying had been related by othei's pres ent.
