Sentenced to Hang;. riF.STOI UttfTIIE STHbS ll* ill OMRS HIX HEITII SHTEV E. Judge Konvy Orders the Mur derer of Old ,1/aii \ ales to be Flung Privately on the Second Day of.July. I Evening News: At ten minute* pant 10 o'clock to lay Deputy Sheriff Sililev and Sailor Collin* walked into the Superior Ciurt room with a tall, black nogrobetween them. Ho was manacled, but was released on enter ing the bar of the court and took his seat in an unconcerned way. His face wore a rather pleasant expression and indicated no fear whatever. Jhe man was Preston X alentme, convicted of the murder of old man Vales, the former night watchman of the Street Railway Company, and he was in court for the purpose of receiving his death sentence. After the discharge of preliminary business and one or two more sen tences, Judge Roney said: "Preston Valentine stand up! Have you anything to say why sentence of death should not now be pronounced ujx>n you Valentine -“Judge, I don t know anything I have to say. I am in the hands of the law I am receiving death for the crime of another man, but I am in the hands of the law Judge Honey then pronounced ths death sentence ns follows "On the morning of the 12th of September, IHhI, the y.«>pl« of this i city were shocked beyond expression at the murder of one of its citizens, a quint, peaceful old man, Win Vales. Suspicion pointed to you as the murderer, and after many long months of search by the officers of the law you wore apprehemb’d in a distant State and brought back to the scene of the crime. The grand jury, al this term, charged you with the crime, and uftei a fair trial before an impartial jury of your county you were adjudged juilty ami infused a recommendation to life imprisoment. This being so, it now le-conms my painful duty as Jtlie presiding officer of this court, to pass upon you the sentenae of the law. Able counsel, under the appointment of the court, defended you, and you were accorded every right and privilege to establish your innocence. This you tailed to do. The conies •ions proven on the trial were amply corroborated by other evidence, leaving little room if any, to doubt your guilt The murder you com mitted appears to have been without the slightest provocation on the part of the munlerod man. He had done you no wrong, and yet. without one moment's warning, for tlio paltry sum of n few dollars, you cruelly took his life, saturated with oil and set lire to his person to cover your inhuman and brutal crime. "No wonder that you wanted the money changed. It was blood money the evidence of a great crime. “If you had a conscience, oh, how it must have laen rucked and tortured nt the sight mid thought of that accursed money. Thu facts in your case show you to b* a man of an abmd med and mal g mint heart, and vou have been adjudged unworthy longer to live and move among your fellow men "As your life is drawing to a close, lot me entreat you, in the few remaining days left you to pre pare to meet your God. Go to him iu earnest prayer, confess your sins, lay bare to Him your guilty heart, and ask Him to have mercy on vour soul Willie He As just, yet He is merciful and able to save you from all sin. Whereupon it i« ordered and ad judged that Preston V alentum be taken hence to the jail of this coun ty, when# he shall la- securely con fined until the 2d day of July next. On which day, amt between the hours 4 11 and 12 o'clock the Sheriff, his deputy or such other officer as he may appoint, together with a suitable guard, shall take the said Praatou Valentine from mod jail to some private and convenient place witlnu the curtilege thereof to la' provided by the authorities of said county, where from a gallows and in the presence only of the executing officer, the guard, the jiliyaici.tn. the relatives of the crimi- nal and such clergymen and friends' as he may denim, the mml Pseaton Valentine shall l>e. by the said sheriff, his deputy or other office, hanged by the nock until he is | dead. Ami may the Loid hav? mercy on liis soul! “When the attending physician, to be provided for by the sheriff, shall declare that death has super vened, the body shall be taken down, and, if desired; delivered over to hi- friends for burial, other wise to be interred by the county authorities at public expense. When the sentence was pronounc ed. Po -ton Valentino sat down un moved, indifferent ami apparently uninterested Not a muscle moved and no trace of fear was discovered in his face. He seemed perfectly careless, and when carried back to . jail he preserved the same stoical manner. The sentence was placed upon the | minutes, signed by Judge Roney and I attested by Solicitor General Wright, and Preston Valntine will be seen no , more in public.
