Intelligent Gratitude of a Dog.
Pittsburg Dispatch: -‘You may
call it instinct, if you like, but I shall
insist that it is intelligence that makes
some brutes behave so sensibly as
they do,” said an Allegheny gentle
man in conversation with a reporter
last evening, and then the gentleman
added:
*a ve had all the proof I want cf it
to-day. In the dooryard of an unoc
cupied house adjoining mine twelve
little puppies uttered their first yelp
yesterday morning. Their mother,
an old black and white mongrel, with
an eye the safety of her large new
family, took them one by one and
laid them in a narrow area down by
one of the cellar windows. One of
the panes happened to be out of the
window, however, and before night
every one of the puppies had crawled
through the opening and fallen to the
cellar floor, some six feet below.
'‘Next morning we missed them,
and from the whining of the mother,
supposed that the puppies were all
dead on the hard cellar floor. But
later in the day the maternal brute
set up such a pawiug and howling
at the cellar window that I made
up my mind there was some
puppy life below. Accordinly I broke
into the cellar and, to my surprise,
found eight of the little family of
dogs still alive aud kicking. One by
one I took them up and placed them
in the dooryard grass for the mother
to take wherever she might choose,
and one by one she laid them back in
the area of the broken cellar win
dow.
“This compelled me to stop up the
holes in the broken pane, to prevent
the puppies from crawling through
again. Then, when it was all done,
the old mother brute, beside herself
as she was with joy, and anxious to
devote every second of her time to
the recovered puppies, crawled up
laboriously out of the area, and,
leaving the litter alone, came wrig
gling and sneezing, and all but laugh
ing, up to me, a stranger, and licked
my hand as I held it down to pat her
head.
“No, that’s not instinct That is as
plain as intelligent a ‘Thank you’ as a
human being ever uttered.”

Haye Nothing to Do with Dead People.
St Paul Globe: “Take my advice,”
remarked a traveler from Wisconsin
to a companion on the Milwaukee
“limited” train, as the two occupied
the smoking apartment of the sleeper,
“and have nothing to do with dead
people right after their death.”
“What are you talking about?”
asked his seat mate.
“Pm talking about laying out dead
people. And what is more, I know
what I’m talking about, for I've han
dled more than my share of dead
men.”
“Undertaker ?” queried his travel
ing companion.
“No,” replied the man of experience,
“I never was an undertaker nor never
•old any undertakers’ goods. But in
my old home, Beloit, Wis., I knew
everybody, and some way or nother
they got in the habit of sending for
me to assist in fixing the remains for
burial. I got to be quite an expert
at the business, and never thought of
any disagreeable feeling in connection
with the work. A change come over
ms, aud now I am just as nervous as
. a man can well be while fooling
around the cold and lifeless body.
I “Bat the change was the result of
an accident. One of my old friends
J died, and I was promptly on hand to
j assist in preparing his remains for
'their last resting place. My first
object was to adjust in place a set of
false teeth which, immediately after
death, had slipped out of place. I
was alone. Without a thought I put
my hand in his mouth and drew the
plates in position, when, much to my
surprise aud inconvenience, the dead
man’s jaws closed d >uu on my hand
like a vise. My surprise gave way to
pain as the set jaws began to press
harder and harder on my fingers.
“I had only one band to work with,
so I was unable to move the jaws and
get my fingers out aud the rigor of
death was becoming more and more
manifest the longer I waited. Just
at that time the widow of the dead
mad wandered into the room. She
saw my position aud imagining that
her husband had revived fainted dead
away. As-s'stance finally came aud the
old lady was carried out, after which
I was rescued from tie vise of the
dead man's jaws.
“Since that experience I have been
afraid to wash a dead man, as I
imagined all sorts of things and last
ing injuries received from touching
the dead.”
Ridins into Town-
Albany, Ga., News: Some ten
miles from the city ou Sunday morn
ing a country calf stood upon the
Brunswick and Western i abroad track
ruminating upon her morning's meal.
But the un< xpected happens even to
a calf. The train came along as usual.
The calf decliited to get off the track.
The cow catcher picked her up and
the calf, being young and wiry,
adapted itself to the situation and
rode safely into the city. Engineer
Brock loosed the calf from its fast
enings in the cow catcher and pre
sented it sound and well to a little
friend in the city.

BLOOD and MONEY
, The blood of man has much to do
i in shaping bis actions during his pil
grimage through this troublesome
world, regardless of the amount of
present or expectant money in pocket
or stored away in bank. It is a con
ceded fact that we appear as our blood
makes us, and the purer the blood,
the happier, healthier, prettier and
wiser we are; hence the oft repeated
! interrogatory, “how is your blood ?”
With pure streams of life-giving fluid
coursing through our veins, bounding
through our hearts and ploughing
through our physical frames, our
morals become better, our constitu
tion stronger, okr intellectual facul
ties more acute and grander, and men, (
women and children happier,healthier
and more lovely.
The unprecedented demand, the
unparalleled curative powers, and the
unmistakable proof from those of un
impeachable character and integrity,
point with an unerring finger to B.
B. B. —Botanic Blood Balm—ns far
the best, the cheapest, the quickest
and the grandest aud most powerful
blood remedy ever before known to
mortal man, in the relief and positive
cure of Scrofula, Rheumatism, Skin
diseases, all taiuts of blood poison,
Kidney complaints, old ulcers and
sores, cancers, catarrh, etc.
B. B. B. is only about three years
old—a baby in age, a giant in power
—but no remedy in America can
make or ever has made such a won
derful showing in its magical powers
in curing and entirely eradicating the
above complaints, and gigantic sales
in the face of frenzied opposition and
would be moneyed monopolists.
Letters from all points where in
troduced are pouring in upon us,
speaking in its loudest praise. Some
say they receive more benefit from one
bottle of B. B. B. than they have from
twenty, thirty and fifty and even one
hundred bottles of a boasted decoc
tion of inert and non-mcdicinal roots
and branches of common forest trees.
We hold the proof in black and white,
and w<- also hold the fort.
POLICEMAN’S VIEWS
Mrs. M. M. Prince, living at 38
West Fair St. Atlanta, Ga., Las been
troubled for several months with an
ugly form of catarrh, attended with a
copious and offensive discharge from
both nostrils.
Her system became so affected and
reduced that she was confined to bed
at my house for some time, and re
ceived the attention of three physi
cians, and use ! a dozen bottles of an
extensively advertised blood remedy,
all without the least benefit.
She finally commenced the use of
B. B. B. with a decided improvement
at once, and when ten bottles had
been used, she was entirely cured of
all symptoms of catarrh.
It gave her an appetite, and increas
ed her strength rapidly, and I cheer
fully recommend it as a quick and
cheap tonic and Blood Purifier.

Atlanta, Jan. 10,1886 Policeman
