Social Equality- Athens Banner: For some weeks there has been a well dressed white woman, hailinglrom Yankeedom somewhere, who has been boarding private white families, but her associates are chosen entirely from our colored population. She has frequently been seen taking buggy rides with negro men, and seems to prefer their company to her own color. She met at the house where she boards a lady visitor the other day, and remarked that she always made it a rule to call on both her colored and white neighbors, and that the most delightful company she has met was° among the black people of : Athens; that she considered a negro in every respect as good as ( a white person. We are surprised that any decent white family in our city would allow such a . creature to board with them and also any colored family with sell respect should associate w ith such scrapings of the North. Social equality is not tolerated in Georgia, and the sooner this adventuress realizes the fact the oetter lor her. Jones -oro, Texas. Dec. 23th, 1885. TcflDr. J. H. McLea-x, St. Louis Mo. This certities'that.my sinter, Emily Crews was taken fifteen years ago with a breast dis ease in connection with menstrual derange ments which produced a' severe cough and general debility, rendering her helpless and unable for any kind of service, and after hal fling the skill of some of our best physic ans and using several hundred dollars worth of various medicines on her to nog 0 '" 1 - East June I procured a bottle of Dr. J. H. McLean s Homoeopathic Liver and Kidney Balm which at once 1 began to help her, since then she Inc used seven bottles, and to our joy is restored to good health, is gaining flesh and has be come strong and able to do Ker housework she is entirely relieved of her troubles and we would not be without the medicine under any consideration. Bill Arp on the Earthquake- But somehow, or other, we are not calm and serene. I don’t like the confident assurance with which these scentific men predict anothei great earthquake and a storm that is to sweep destruction over this fair land next Wednesday. About this time the equinoctial storm is due, but we understand that and are used to it. But if it is the conjunction of great planets chat is to shake up things and made the earth change its center of gravity, I don’t sec why the dis turbance would be greater at one point than another, for the earth is revolving at the rate of a thous and miles an hour and presenting all sides to the planets. Hie truth is that ever since Mr. Wiggins predicted the earthquake at Charleston I feel a little too serious to make fun of these prophecies. If we dig a hole in t e ground it may start a crack that will open. If we get up on a Piedmont escarpment the tornado will have a fair chance at us. So I reckon we had better do as Mr. Grady said nt Charleston “trust in tlvi Lord.” There is comfort no a’ in that Scripture which said “no man knoweth the day nor the hour.” And so I reckon the earth will hold together a while longer. -Far bettor than the han*h treitnuMit of nedicinoH which horribly gripe the patient and Ifstroy th • ro iting of the stomach.
