THE MULE WALKED OFF,
AND LEFT THE MURDERER SWING
ING IN THE AIR —A WIERD SC’-’NE
Carnesville, Ga., L’ecemlicr
28.—1 n describing the recent
lynching of Sanders, the Register
says that on Saturday night a no
tice was left at the jail, staling
that Sanders would ne lynched on
the following night, and that Mr.
Ivie and his family, who live in
the jail, and the prisoners, need
feel no alarm, that, no harm was in
tended to any but Sanders. About
9 o’clock on Sunday night little
squads of men were seen collect
ing on the square, and at 10 :30 a
large body of mounted men rode
into town. They halted with the
head ot the column near Tabor’s
store, and sat for some time silent
and motionless as an army ot
spectres. The purpose tor which
they halted. " hatever it may have
been, having been accomplished,
they moved off in the direction of
the jail. Only a portion ot the
crowd entered the jailyard, a large
number, probably a majority, re
maining with the horses They
were met at the jail door by
Sheriff McConnell, who remon
strated w ill them without avail.—
Sanders was tied, br< light out ot
the jail, taken up behind one of
the men, and the party moved off
in the direction fiom whence they
caine. At the forks of the road,
a mile ami a quaiter northeast of
Carnesville, the party halted and
built a large tire, and decided the
fate of their pr soner. They ap
peared to act through a committee.
SANDERS CONFESSES.
An opportunity was given San
ders to make a statement, which
was as follows :
I killed Swilling because he
choked tne two weeks ago. Rachel
Kimball had nothing to do with
the killing, but we had talked
about it and she knew of it. V\ e ;
had no row hat night I went to |
bed about 8 o’c ock, slept awhde,
got up and went out an i g t the
ax, walked to the bed wheie .John
was asleep He wn> lying on his
right side and I struck hun with
the edge of the ax on the lett side
of the head just above the ear.
Mr- Swibi g raised up in the bed
and Ird o ted, - Lord, p-'P'il
st rue r. iter on the op >t th It ad
with the olade of the ax. I hey
liuth struggled, »«ut n> ilher -p >ke
after 1 struck them. I turm d to
the bed where the li»lle lioys were
sleeping and struck them on the
heads with the blade of the ax.
About that time the baby cried, i
and I killed it with the ax handle.
I tlien put oil on the beds, set
them on fire, wont into the back
room, laid down mid remained
until the fire sm ked me out. I
nin out on the piazza and hallooed
the liest I could, and ran to
Rachel's house and ran against the
door. I could not leave the place
after the killing was over. My
conscience would not let me go.
A WIERD SCENE.
After making this statement he
requested some one to pray for
him. Young Mr. Hunnicut con-;
sented to pray for him and request- j
ed all persons present who were
willing to pray tor the p isoncr to
kneel down. No one knelt then,
but when Mr. Hunnicut and the
prisoner knelt the entire eiowd
joined them. Later on he again
asked some one to pray for him,
when Mr. Ivie prayed, the crowd
again kneeling with them. The
preparations were by that time
complete, the rope wa* fastened
around his neck, he was placed on
a mule which was led under the:
tree to which he was to be hung.
He stood on the mule’s back while
the rope was being fastened above,
and played in a bioketi, disjointed
prayer. Among the last things he
said was, that Raenel Kimball had
nothing to <1 > with ih • Ki ling. -
While he was praying the mule was
LED FROM UNDER HIM
and he died without a struggle
I he crowd soon dispersed ad left
his Body hanging,bm it was moved
before mor. ing. The company
numleied over a hundred. No
one was dis. uised and no effort
was made at concealment. It was
composed of staunch citizens.—
There was not the slightest disor
der or excitement. Public senti
ment demanded the immediate ex
ecution of Sanders. The people
throughout th*- county favored it,
almost to a man. If the atrocity
of crime ever justifies lynching, it
was justifiable in this instance.
THE FESTIVE RACHEL SKIPS.
Notwithstanding Sanders’s as
sertion that Rachel Kimball did
not join in the killing, yet enough
was shown to prove that they had
talked the matter over. The longer
she staid here, the stronger the
feelin" grew against her. Several
citizens, not wishing a repetition
of Sui.day night s scene, advised
her to skip by the light of the
moon, which she did. It is be
lieved that she is now a sojourner ■
in Flowery Branch.
