WHY GAS FOUMS AND I.AMI'3 EX-
M.ODE—THE ‘YAY To JBX-
Tixijri“ii.
Boston Herald: Why <l< es oi
stink in use in the hui|m?ycti ask
1 wifi tell you, if you would lik<
to know. Now, with the beat oil
that is made yon can produce u
gas in your house that wi.l mak«
the atmosphere aS disagreeable u
it is uuli •nllhy. In all lumps,
where proper and complete com
bustion is maintained there is no |
perceptible odor from any quality I
of oil sold in the market. But the
trouble is, when people want to
leave h house or a rm on for a time
and keep a light burning, they
turn down the wick. This is done
for economy in most iustances.bul
there is not only no economy in it,j
ns I shall show you, but there i
ulao danger to health and life.— ,
Now, when you light i Inmp/.h* o. 1
;. at firat a tirno when the flame'
will not barn high without smok
ing ; bu. after the lamp and chim
ney arc properly heated and a full
supply of oil is established through
the capillaries of the wick,a stroin.
flame can he maintained. Now,if,
with this supply establi'bed, we
turn down the wick, while there is l
« limit to the flume of the wick,|
owing to its decrease of burning
surface, the supply of the oil con
tinues in the same ratio, what is
uot consumed in the flame being
volatilized into ga<, which is car
ried out with the ordinary products
of combustion into the air of the
room, vitiating it and making it
very unhealthy to breathe.
Now here, in my opinion, is tin
basis of lamp explosions, ami it the
proper proportion of atmospheric
air gets into a chimney, or is
blown into it, an explosion is sure
to result. In my opinion most of
the explosions of lamps, so-called
occur by explosions in tho ch m
ney«. A lamp should never be
put out by blowing down the
chimney. It can lie easily extin
guished by blowing across the top
■of the chimney, and a very little
practice will show that this is the
easiest and best way. Alter blow
ing out, the wick should bo turned
down inside, the t die, to prevent
the oil flowing over. A close at
tention to the muthods I have in
dicated will, I am sure, prevent
most, if not all the accidents from
explosions ot kerosene oil, ami
save many lives, as well as many
thousands of dollars’ worth oi
property every year.
