A certain young man give this to
bis girl Sunday, to repeat until ho
calls again.
Country Cousinsand reader, I hope
you all will give mo a hearty welcome
this week, as it has been several weeks
since I wrote to the dear old Sentinel.
I enjoyed reading the letters as it was
my pleasure to see the paper every
week, while gone, ray visit to Phyllis
was more than pleasant. She has a
very desireable home, everything
around it to make it attractive and
pleasant. Only one thing that marred
our happiness, that was the sudden
illness of little “Phyllis.” But she was
almost well, Sunday when I left her,
and hope ere this she has entirely re
covered; I know she is, if Dr. John
L., continues his visits, and will say
I found bis girl all O. K., but her
heart is “auothers.” Oh ! don’t neg
lect my little pets, “Lick” and “Pete.”
I spent a short time with our es
teemed cousin, “John Scroggins,”
found him as jovial us ever, a little
more so I thought, for ho liked to
teased me to death about a certain
young man up there. I was greatly
relieved Sunday, when I found out
“it was not near as bad as he stated
it through the p.”
As far as we saw, the crops were
promising. Saw some sorry corn and
cotton, that was on account of the
crops being larger than the labor.
I would like to have some of Mr.
D’s nice watermelons this week.
News is scarce this week. As Bill
Arp says, I found Appling ' calm and
serene.”
Thue has been several new corres
pondents added to the paper since I
last wrote Masadonia Short Stops by
“Mac.” Think lam acquainted with
him.
I had a pleasant dream while I was
sleeping that “Rip Van Winkle."
Hope it will come to pass.
Tbc young man that went to White
Oak looking for a certain girl Sorry
to say she has changed her quarters,
but hope be saw her all the same.
It is true that Appling is on a big
boom. But it is a poor place for a
fellow to get lodging. Even the hotel
can’t give u care worn traveler accom
modation. We hope while Appling is
lon the boom, some one will put up a
nice hotel.
Some of our neighbors has some
very fine watermelons ripe, but they
have forgotten the writer.
Our esteemed Clerk of Court and
■ Tax Receiver, dinned with up Mon

welcome.
The perfume of orange blossoms is
floating through the air again.
Two disappointed girls were in the
village Monday. Why didn’t some of
their beaux come and carry them to
Grovetown to the barbecuej?
The base ball club is ready to play
a match game now, especially the
champion players.
F. D. G., has bought him a road
cart to ride his girl around in. If 1

Messrs Editors:
I come again this week to thank
■ you for the place you assign me to
i grow in the field of the Sentinel.
On 1 ist S.ibbath a praise worthy
crowd assembled at Kiokee Church
to bear, to nee, ami to be seen. Speak
ing of hearing, those who desired and
expected, had their hope gratified by
hearing sonistliingcalcnlatod to warm
|up thr faith of their misguidings.—
: Most eloquently did the preacher
! show that every one desires success,
1 ami the strength of that desire lies in
the earnestness of effort ; tho differ
-1 cnee is in the objects in which we dc
j sire to succeed. In the same eonnec
, tion he shows that, if we are earnest
I in faith, faith being a worthy cause in
! God’s account, our success will be
justly a mutt, r of rejoicing.
The sermon leads mo to say that
our success ns a nation depends upon
the faith ot the people. It is vain to
hope for that which we desire not and
expect not. The voice of tho people
is often God’s pot missive will. What
is the voice of a people but their de
sire and expectation ? \\ hat makes
us desire but the hope of obtaining ?
Several visitors graced the occasion
by being present, among whom were
Mr. Win. T. Cass and daughter, of
I McDuffie county, J. A. Banks, of
| Grovetown.

I attended. Tim singing was grand,

At half past eleven o’clock last Sun
day morning, a crowd gathered
around Farmer’s pond to see the
Mormon’s method of baptising. When
tho hour arrived three Indios and
three gentlemen marched up and was
immersed, but thrown a little harder
than the baptist.
Mr. Henry Marks, a popular young
man from Wheclos Station, has been
visiting friends around tho town.
Come again Henry, wo arc always
glad to welcome you to our homo.
The A. ft C R. R- is progressing
! rapidly. Tho chain gang is a very
j popular society, some one joins it
I every wook and is initiated by “Black
Mariah” when necessary.
We regret to learn that Mr. Paul
' Griffin, formerly from this county,
but now a merchant in Augusta, was
burnt out last week. He lost his en
tire stock of goods. Mr. Griffin is a
rising young man, ami his friends
around Mayville sympathize with him,
but hope the loss will be covered by
insurance.
Captain I*. Armstrong, of Augusta,
was up yesterday looking after his
farming interest. Tim Captain is u
splendid manager, and his crop plain
ly shows that there is more in the
man than in the land.

Editors Sentinel :
In order to ’accomplish any great
undertaking, or achieve any grand
end. it is very important that we aim
high, and let us go into thin grand
work with a determination to suc
ceed, and allow no croakers to come
upon tho scene, and ruin the whole
design. And just hero allow mo to
cite you loan instance of pluck and
energy. Many years ago n little in
significant town in upper Georgia,
spiung into existence, and called her
name Marthasville, and uh hlio grow
older Him aHsumed the name of At
lanta, and later on she styles horself
the Gate Way City of the South. Now
the Atlanta, tho bold, and defiant,
with her indomitable energy and
courage she knows no Bnch word as
fail, she shuts h< r eyes to seeming
impossibilities ami shouts it. hli.il) be
done. She never lets a chance Blip so
gain a victory, especially if that vic
tory is to add to her already great
name and fortune. A few years ago
Atlanta rivaled Milledgeville for the
Capitol; she said she must have it,
and went to work to get it, nudiii the
fuco of all opposition, success crown
ed her effort. I give this instance,
simply to inspire courage, and incite
to energy in our laudable undertaking.
Now to my hist point, but not least
in imporiance, mid lam done. 1 have
no doubt but that the inevitable has
issued its decree, that Harlem shall be
the county Hite. lam not a prophet,
nor the son of a prophet, but I can
predict that much, without fear of
being called a false prophet, if so, it
behooves us to act. upon the sugges
tion, and go ahead and make niTaiigo
merits for tho building, and thus be
renily for the great influx of citizens.
My fellow citizens this picture Ihiio
vain imagination, it is a real problem,
capable of solution, and if ho, let uh
solve it, it must lie done, and if done,
we reap the benefit of our labor, it
will inhance the value of the property
of every citizen and farmer for miles
around. It will bring Northern capi
talist among uh; investors hunting in
vestments for their capital, who will
purchase our lands, and become iden
tified with uh, mid the old fields that
arc now thrown out as worthless will
bring good prices, and be brought
i into a state of fine cultivation, ami
bloom and blossom like the rose.
Northern and Western men are
i colonizing in Morgan. Greene mid oth
ler counties in our State, bringing in
their capital and developing our
' country.
Yes every farmer in 10 miles of
, Harlem will fuel the influence of such
an enterprise, and find a market for
his produce, also beef, pork, mutton,
chickens, butter, egg» and vegetables,
will find ready sale, ho let uh prow
forward with the work, and prepare
for future events, and be ready for
the emergency us it comes rolling on!
| Let the ball that has been put in mo
-1 tion, roll on to gloi ious success.
