Yankee Books lieprllited In .Japan.
An illustration of the cleverness and
imitative powers of the .Japanese, which
might also serve to point an argument in
Ils' discus ion of tlie international copy
right question, Is afforded l»y certain
Japam -c publications w hich have been
' exhibited to tlie prominent officers of the
state department. It appears that when
the study of English was made compul
sory in Japan u number of American
school Ixsiks were inqxa'ted and by formal
order made the text books of the native
sclkxilh. American lxx,k makers had
quite a lucrative trade for a time. But
tlie Japanese wxm turned their attention
“to the subject, and after a few experi
ments Ix-gaii turning out clever reprints
of tlie American publications, of such ex
cellence and in such quantities tiiat tlie
demand for tlie American product has
now practically ceased. The only inferi
ority ot the Japanese books noticeable at
a casual examination is in the illustra
tions, and this is accounted for by the
fact that the native engravers have not
yet discovered the art of cutting their
pictures on the grain end of the block,
lull uniformly engrave on the side, which
results in a slightly blurred picture.—
