THE DESTRUCTIVE FUMES.

At noon Saturday last a dense
black smoke began to ris.e in the direc
tion of Mr. Wm. Lansdell’s gin house
and with cue voice all declared it was
Mr. L’s gin house being consumed.
Very soon a long continued blowing
of the engine whistle confirmed our
fears. The fire originated in the
press room, the result of carelessness
in the use of matches. Loss estimat
ed at S7OO. No insurance. The ex
pensive tiro extinguisher, recently at
tached, proved utterly worthless. In
I addition to the buil ling two bales of
cotton and .300 bushels of seed were
i consumed.
STILL ANOTHER.
We learn that on Sunday morning
the gin house of Mr. C. H. Ellington,
in McDuffie, together with three
bales of cotton succumbed to the
' fiery clement. We tailed to ascer
tained the orgin of the fire.

The Festival-
At an early hour Friday evening
last the Phillips lot was brilliantly
lighted up with Chinese lanterns.—
Preparatory to the opening of the
festivaljand in duo time the crowd
began to assemble, when the enjoy
ment of the evening commenced. The
demand for ice cream and cake was
unprecedented, therefore it was finan
cially as well as socially a grand suc
cess. All are under special obliga
tions to Mrs. Paschal for substantial
contributions and personal services
tendered. The success was largely
due to her untiring energy and good
judgment.
