BOYCOTTED BY THE GIRLS.
The Fate of Young Tipplers in
Parts of the Pennsylvania Coal
Regions.
[From the Philadelphia Times.]
The progress of temperance princi
ples among the
of tlie coal regions within the hist ten
years is simply without a parallel in the
history of temperance reform. In fact
the temperance feeling is now so strong
that no young man can enter the charm
ing circle of female socio y unless he is
on i’vowed temperance i: an and wears
ti> j Father Matthew badge. It has now
tome to snch a pass that the young
Irish-American ladies will have nothing
to do with the man who drinks. By
.'raising this boycott against the drink
tlm girls have played the part of true
temperance missionaries, in that they
succeeded in driving the young men
into the societies. An illustration of
this was seen in the town of Beaver
Meadow last spring, when all the girls
in the place combined and resolved to
have nothing to do with any young man
p’.itil ho had first signed the pledge and
joined the St. Aloysips Society. For
awhile it was thought tho young ladies
were not in earnest and that the boycott
would soon be lifted. But the young
ladies were determined, and when tho
young fellows found this out they sur
rendered, and forthwith there was a rush
for admiss on into the local temperance
society. Tho latter is now in a very
Nourishing condition. Os those who
joiu these temperance societies about
ten out of forty “fall from grace,” in
other words they go back to drink.
But the deserter’s downfall does not
last long. After his debauch he sees the
folly of his ways and thinks how happy
he was when he was sober.
But this is not the worst. All his
friends are traveling in an opposite di
rection and shun the outcast altogether,
Tho result is that a man who breaks his
pledge becomes disgusted with himself
and returns to the society. After
taking the pledge for a second time ho
hardly over goes back to drink again.
The number who do break the pledge a
second time is only one in seventy.
A member who forfeits his membership
in a society forfeits all his duos paid into
the treasury by him. All the societies
are beneficial, and take good care of tiie
sick, widows and orphans. The St.
Aloysius Society, of Wilkesbarro, Inis
480 names on its rolls and over §7,0:)()
in its treasury. The Father Matthew
Society and the Father Matthew ' adets
have 200 more members. Every so
ciety has a handsome uniform.
