We embarked in its publication realizing that it was an experiment, and experience has demonstrated that, financially at least, it has not been a success and we propose to try it no longer. On Thursday, the sth of January, we ex pect to resume our weekly visits in an enlarged form -from that of n six column folio to an eight. All who have paid the difference in price and whoso subscriptions have not expired will be given due credit on our books. We have perfected arrangements to give our readers a paper second to no country paper in the St ite at the low price of $1 a year in advance. Our Seniof will still preside over the editorial columns ami do the gen eral selecting; while the Junior will spare no pains in keeping the local department abreast with the times We have secured the services of Mr. 0. E. Atkinson, who will have charge of the mechanical department of the paper. As for the fighting editor we will dispense with his ser vices, as we expect to try to live in peace with all mankind, and begin the now year with a happy greeting to all. XMAS- Barrons Sentinel : A'i'*i the vonng folks, happy, care less ? oung folks Xmas is doubly wel come. So it was with me. God bless the children, how we should en dcuvorJb add t<- their amusement tbeunuppinewL I have been rumi- somewhat to-day about Xmas kiwi glad you come but once a year. Humiliating is nothing more than building air castles, and I've been building some to-day. Says I, “sup pose you had about ten thousand ddllurs out at work for you?" If I had I’d look at least 15 years young er for those care-wrinkles would van ish and, oh, wouldn’t I enjoy Xmas— wouldn't I wade into a big gobler with avidity, wouldn’t I sit in my ,»asy chair, with no such little bothera tions ns no wood to cut, no cows to feed, no furrows to run, no compost heaps to build, no acid to buy and lust-, but not least, no- -Great Scots, no—sons of midnight to coax along. Well, I traveled on in this line until I got (so to speak) in an ant's nest, these big old rod ants, you know, add when they begun to bite and sting I awoke from my unpleasant reverie with the understanding that I need ed a boss, and hearing some one say, •‘look here, the meal is out, you’d bet ter shell a turn of corn, and bless your life, here was my boss, the Oman with a tray of sausage meat, mixing sage ami pepper in it, mind engaged and fingers, too, in a laudable busi ness —contented with her lot. And herejis the secret —contentment. Now I am not the only one perhaps who aometimes bewail their lot who al low such refiectiona to ward off the enjoyment that Xmas would bring, but thanks to goodneas these spells are ouly periodical and I am ready with bright hopes, too, to take in • Xmas, and then, with ax in hand, to fell a viney, briery, tangled up pine thicket for the crop of ’BB. Os eouise if I had lO.OOt) might be ready for Xmas, but as it is. 1 am not and m v or was it seems. 1 believe it is hard er to get ready for Xmas than it is to get rid of gruss in hoeing time. Clif fy’s idea of Xmas is that you just but up against the wall of the next year ami there is no possible opening for work—nt least for 30 days and some of them just but on and never find the gate. .But awnv with such doleful thoughts—this is Christmas! I'be chickens know it and are prouder, crow louder and longer and oftener. Santa Clause is coming and the chil dren have driven some nails to hang their stockings on. Ami I intend to hang up a bag and will be not at all surprised to find a hickory in it, for the boss says I need it and I know that euffv needs it and if it was sash ionable to apply it He would quickly I find the gate. G. I!ax Arrived- Rev. R. P. Martin, pastor of the Harlem circuit for the year 1888,. ar rived on Tuesday. It is to be regret ted that the church here was not aware of his movements, for they had intended to meet him in a body and give him a warm reception. How ever, he is among friends and we hope a successful year is in store for him. Stone Mountain Route GEORGIA RAILROAD COMPANY, ) Office Gen’l Manager. t- Auguhta. Ga., S< pt 17th, I**7.
