Ari.ine Chapel, August 12.—
Editor Recorder: Please allow me to
give the readers of your spicy and
interesting paper a few dots from
our quiet community. We will first
consider the prospects for crops, as
this is of all importance to us, all of
us being farmers. Corn crops have
been greatly cut off by a drought we
had through the month of June,
though, I think, by close economy,
there will be enough gathered to
feed us for next year. Cotton is
looking well, though farmers are
fearful that some disaster will cut
them out of a good cotton crop; it
has already commenced to throw off
its fruit, caused by the great amount
of rain we
the last thre'e or four weeks. Old
men win) have lived here for many
years, say they have never known so
much rain to fall in this county for
the length of time, as fell on last
Thursday and Thursday night.
Allow me, here, to give you an in¬
cident, as narrated by a preacher of
high standing, a gentleman Whose
truthfulness cannot be questioned,
which is as follows; On last Thurs¬
day night rain fell in such torrents
that it drowned many of the “preach¬
er’s” chickens, but ten of which he
particularly alluded to. They were
nighting it at a wood-pile near the
house, where they were found next
morning drowned, and as stiff as
sticks. After the sun had risen, it
was found that there was some life
in one of the chicks; the others were
carried to the fire, and about two
thirds of the number came to life.
So tliiS is the chicken tale.
Wc have preaching at the Chapel
twice a month, hope the morals of
of our people may become ameliorat¬
ed, though we have not vet had our
protracted mooting, nor do wc know
when it will ho. We are having a
right interesting Sabbath School at
the Chapel, with Mr. B. J. Wood for
Superintendent, and Mr. S. R. Wil¬
liams principal teacher. Oh, the
amount of deep questions lie puts to
us! Our literary school is progressing
finely, but that grave teacher of on r’s
fights a good deal, some say. •
Well, Mr. Editor, I said wc were
all politicians, too; or, at least, wo
talk about onr candidates for cotint v
offices as great deal. But, who shall
be Senator? is now the fill important
query. Well, now, wc arc not so well
versed in this matter, but I know
this; Captain James Hicks is the
man who would precisely suit the
office, and one whom the office would
suit—a right man at a right place,
should wc succeed in getting him
there. Wc can have him there, too,
if our Hicks delegates will stand
firmly up and vote for him in every
ballot. We hope the gentlemen of
this delegation will hear to no com¬
promise. Yours truly,
The Wanderer.

The convention adopted the two

was unanimously adopted. Before

Chausobv, Ga., August 7 .—Dear
Recorder: Please allow me space in
your valuable paper for a few dots.
People through our section have
made very good crops, especially
the following named gentlemen;
Messrs. Burch, Clark, Coleman, Nor¬
ris, Rogers and others. Cotton crops
were very fine until now; they are
damaged considerably by rust. There
is a disease prevalent among sheep in
this section, and proves very fatal.
Mr. Daniel Purvis lost eighteen head
in one day and night. Some think
this disease is brought on by drinking
water from the turpentine boxes, as
the branches have all been dry and
the sheep would drink rain water
from these boxes. This disease has
caused great excitement among the
people in the range of Mr.' Marlow
Clark, who is one of the largest
sheep owners in Dodge county. We
were iqych pleased to meet in our
county Messrs. W. N. Right, David
Johnson and Thomas Tapley, three
of your good citizens. More anon,
Respectfully, W. X.
