We notice that, the loss of Maine
didn't whip the republicans. Why
should the hiss of Indiana defeat the
democrats?

Indiana.
The democrats of Indiana are go¬
ing to work with a calm determina¬
tion to regain their state. They do
not let doubt once enter in, nor are
they depending upon good luck or
empty boasting. They know that
the result of last Tuesday was
brought about by monov. Men
were bribed outright, voters of both
colors were imported, and repeaters
went about in large numbers. All
this cost an immense sum of money,
and to repeat it in November is
well-nigh impossible. The men
who were bought in October have
already deserted, tIt a colonists liavi
fled the state from fear of punish¬
ment, and the repeaters have return
ed to the large cities from which
they cntnc. Even if Mr. Jewell
could command all the money tha
he could use, it would be next to im
possible to repeat I as (.'Tuesday’s vote
ii Indiana, because the creatures
used on that occasion will he needed
in great part on the fateful Xovem
her day in other states. For this
reason the democrats are hopeful
rhey expect to win back their st.au
and they are working in a manner
that shows that their intention i
not one simply of the tongue.
It now seems probable that th
October election will be set aside a
wholly illegal. The two newlv
eleeted judges of the highest cnuis
have freely declared that they be
lievc the constitutional amendment
were properly ratified, and Judge
Xihlacle, a democrat who lvmains oil
,he bench, is of the same opinion.
It is, therefore, believe 1 that the
three will not hesitate at the first
opportunity to reverse the late de
eision of the court on this subject,
thereby rendering void the election
in October. The republicans accept
.his view of the ease, and it is said
ire preparing to repeat the October
election in November, as the onh
way to save the state from anareliv
Lawyers of both parties arc consider¬
ing that subject, and Senator Me
Donald’s law partner thinks it not
unlikely that both parties will agree
to repeat the election next month.
This would he an additional incen¬
tive to the democrats in the brave
work of redeeming tin' state from
the hands of the men who openly
and brazenly reversed the will of the
people by the most infamous meth¬
ods,— Constitution.
