Miss Lulu Hurst.
Miss Lula Hurst gave an exhibi¬
tion of her wonderful powers, in Ma¬
con, tliis week. The following is
from the Telegraph and Messenger.
“Those who formed part of the
large atjdience last night, and who
expected to be humbugged did not
have their expectations realized.
The performance was remarkable,
and we believe every one of the au¬
dience is now thoroughly convinced
that site «loes ajl lfiat is advertised.
She was introduced in a neat and
appropriate speech hy Sam. II. Jem
ison, Esq., who requested Capt. Mas
senburg, Mr. J. A. Pugh and Mr.
Dave Cromeline to be present on the
stage. Mr. Pugh’s wellknown mod¬
esty prevented his responding and
laud calls for Mr. Jennings Clay
brought out that gentleman.
An ordinary chair was placed on
the stage fronting the audience. On
either side stood Captain Massenburg
and Mr. Clay. Miss Lula went for
ward apt] stood at the bank, placing
the palms of her hands ou the up¬
right of the chair. In a fetf seconds
the chair left the stage and was
whirled into the air. This was re
prated, and those on the stage saw
that the “muscular power” theory
was then and there exploded.
Mr. Clay then graped the round
of the chair and Miss Lula passed
her hands over the hack. With all
his strength Mr. Clay failed to keej
.down the restless chair. Captai*
Massenburg tried the same «.vjx i.
jnent and failed. He then sat down
in the chair and it moved over tin
stage with him.
Her next performance was 'with a
stick and an umbrella, in wh ’ h
same remarkable power was sin * »> It
She wjps roundly applauded, wh
was evidence of the entire satisfac¬
tion of the audience..
After the performance vve in 1 ,
viewed Captain Massenburg, at"
asked him what lie thought of ti
performance.
“Well, I don’t know, She is .
most remarkable i emg lad His
possesses an unJ-finable power,
won’t pivtei|<) to even think w hat
is. There’s no muscular pow.
about it, that's certain. Winn !
was exerting all my physical strong,
to keep the chair down, she simnh
laughed at me. Nilje was not fatigu¬
ed in the least while l was almos
exhausted. Her performances ar
simply wonderful and liter* is not
the least bit of humbug about what
she does. I would advise .all to go
and see her.”
A gentleman in tjie audience said
to our reporter; “I know the secret
of her power, I have given the mat¬
ter some thought and believe I can
explain it. There are people gifted
more than others in music, painting,
pic. The gift is so great in some
that they are regarded as prodigies.
Take Blind Tom, foriastance. Here
is an ignorant negro endowed with
a thousand times more than his share
of music. Well, the whole secret
of Miss Lula’s powers is simply elec¬
tricity. AH of us have more or less
electricity in our bodies, and Miss
Lula, fortunately or unfortunately,
has, like Blind Tom, perhaps, a hun¬
dred times more than her share. A
very simple experiment will prove
the existence of electricity in a per¬
son. A small slip of paper heated
over a lamp, if quickly passed utijler
the arm, will adhere to the wall. I
am certain that if Miss Lula will lay
her hands upon any conducting sub
stance, another effect, will be produo*
yd. You will notice that she uses
all wooden objects—the chair, stic%,
umtyella handle, ect. She
possefses a great amount of
jty in her body.”
“But the Davenport- brothers,
whose feats were somewhat on the
same order claimed that spiritualism
was the agency that controlled
them.”
“Spiritualism be blowcd,” remark¬
ed our friend; “spiritualism is noth¬
ing more nor less than what you see
on the stage there. Electricity is
the whole sum and substance of spir¬
itualism. Let a party of people sit
around a table with hands spread
upon it. In a sfiort while the table
will rise up for one of the party and
he or she is the medium, so spiritu¬
alists would say. Nothing of the
sort. The person for whom the ta¬
ble raised is simply possessed of
more electricity in the body than
the oth‘‘is. I know that any strong
soealled medium can perform the
same feats that Miss Ilurst does, and
I am satisfied that with these exhib
itions spiritualism receives its deatli
blow. Mark my words.”
