Wrightsville Recorder. M. II. MASON & Son, Proprietors. W.Xi TOMPKINS, Editor. Published every Saturday SATURDAY .Tl'hY 20 18K4. •SUBSCRIPTION $1.50 A YEAR, NATIONAL I DEMOCRATIC TICKET. . FOR PRESIDENT,\ HON. GROVER CLEVELAND i OF NEW YORK. FOR VICE-PRESIDENT,\ HON. THOMAS A. HENDRICKS, OF INDIANA. FOR CONGRESS Tenth Congukssioxai, District, UVLaj.Greo.T; Barnes, f OF RICHMOND COUNTY. ThoCirce ly Rescue. The international attempt to sur¬ round the north pole with stations has only resulted in disaster and failure. Eleven stations were estab¬ lished by the nations represented in the international polar conference .beId in Hamburg in 1870. The Uni¬ ted States agreed to establish one m 82 degrees north, and Lieutenant Greely and twenty-four men started ■in June, 1881, for Discovery harbor, .which he reached without difficulty. He staid there in safety and com parative comfort until, in obedience to his instructions, lie was compelled to retreat southward. TJkb responsibility rests not at all upon Lieutenant Greely, who obey¬ ed orders throughout. In tho first place the expedition was sent ten degrees farther north than were tin other expeditions, and too high up for valuable metorological opserva tions. It was folly, to use a mild word, ip send twenty-five men to such a locality. But the folly be¬ came something worse when the ,g°v ) vl.ku-e.nt failed to relieve the Jbtay.y. .explorers in 1882, as had been agreed upon; and the great, wrong of 1882, was redoubled when the expedition of 1883 was so befogged with orders that it left no adequate .supply of provisions for Greelv’s party when it retreated southward in accordance with instruction. The brave men left their polar home last August, every member of the party alive and well; and after a difficult journey on ice floes and by sledges, they were compelled to land at Cape galnne and prepare for winter. Their struggles at Cape Sabine to sustain life are pitiful. Lieutenant Greely was reading the prayers for the dy¬ ing when the relieving party reach¬ ed them. All were dead but eight, ami one poor fellow died after the rescue. Sent where men should never be sent, left in the land of perpoMial ice without relief until under their or¬ ders they sought a point, where a ship or food was to await them— shall it he said that no one at Wash¬ ington has blundered? Shall tin- 1 administration bo he'd guiltless of the lives of these eighteen brave njqity. ho /imply obeyed orders? Tjie awful responsibility can easily be lo¬ cated, and until it is, the entire administration the president and his entire cabinet—should bear (ho odium and disgrace and shame. For Greely and his bravo followers were •absolutely free of fault.— Constitu lion. -------- Georii'in Womlors. Georgia is fast acquirin'; a reputa¬ tion as U;o homo of girls who possess a “peculiar force.” Lulu Hurst, who amused and mystified New York for two weeks or more, is now in Bos ton, where she will prove, probably, as great an attraction as she did in the first named city. Another Goor gia girl, Mattie Lee Price, is giving exhibitions of the “peculiar force” at Wallack’s Theatre. New and there is every reason to think that she will meet with as much ap preciation as Lulu Hurst did. She ■weighs only ninety-five pounds, and if she performs feqts like those of Lulu Hurst she will do mijoh towards destroying the impression that the “peculiar force” is nothing more Ilian well directed and skillfully us- ed muscular power. There is still* another wonder in the held. A ladj r named Coleman from Atlanta is^jow said to be in Washinngton giving private exhibitions of her peculiar power. Reports credit jjer with do¬ ing more wonderful things than is done by either Lulu Hurst or Mattie Price. It is said that she can, by placing the end of a billiard cue on a heavy table and bolding the other end of it, raise the table clear of the floor. If she can do anything as marvelous as that the chances are that she will outshine either of the Other wonders. When the three wonders get to work they ought to advertise Georgia pretty thorougly. It must not be assumed, how-ver, that Georgia wonders are confined to girls with a “peotd'Ltr force.”— Suv. Netes, ---- %+■ ► *- UNDER COVKit OF MOIST. An Estimable Lady Of Walton Cyitni.y Shot Dead in Her One Room. Monroe, Ga., -July 21.—[Special.]—■ There was not a braver soldier in the .old 43rd .Georgia regiment than Captain Jeff T. Mitchell, of this county. He intended to goto tin reunion of his regiment in Atlunln to day, and Saturday night his wifi was busy preparing his clothes. She was as harmless a woman as ever lived, and had no enemies. About ten o’clock Mrs. Mitchell was sitting by a window in her room sewing. Near her on a pallet her hushum } and thr e small children were soni d ly sleeping, T\v,0 loud reports of ; gun are heard in quick ihe window glass is Inqken into; thousand fragments, the poor wmnai leaps from her sent, cries “oh, lord)',” .uni 1 alls across the sleeping lit! H ones, and dies in one minute, pierci ( with thirteen buck shot. These ar< the facts about the most horribh murder ever committed in this conn tv. The neighbors were arouseo and did all they could to find lh murderer. Tracks were seen, could not be identified. Burnt pa per used for wadding was found, examined and proved to be a part, m 'The iJailij ( 'oiistitntio I .of July Oth As there are no daily papers taken, in that community this may prove f clue to the at rest of the gudtv man The whole county is deeply affected All day Sunday a e iroiier’s jur\ were busy hearing evidence, but ad journed without, discovering anv thing positive about the perpetrator. Captain Mitchell is a w ll-do farmer, who lives near Walnut Grove, in the county, and is highly esteemed h\ his neighbors. The slmt was not in tended for him. Just two weeks a go ins grown son died in Con vers, and was brought home and buried. Walton county is fast, becoming fatuous for its bloody crimes. The good people of the county are doing all in their power to punish the guil¬ ty parties.— Comtftmi n. • ◄ ► ♦ l’arkev’s Siiiike Story. From the T.hojuasville Times, ,1. F. Parker comes to the from with the boss snake. It was caught alive by Mr. Parker, chloroform b - ing administered while the snake was asleep. It. was found by Mr. .Parker shortly after it had swallow ed a sheep, and after admiuisterin; the chloroform was dragged to Mr Parker’s residence by means of hitch ing four males to trace chains which were looped around its fangs. Mr, parker hung it by the head to tin giant sycamore tree in front of h s place and striped oil its skin, f which he has made a beautiful car l H ‘ t his parlor floor. It. was thought that tho snako was dead af ter Liking oil the skin, and it was carelessly cut down the next day, when having recovered from tile chloroform, it crawled out of the yard and killed a cow. It next bit a negro and died. This snake had 147 rattles. Mr. Parker will take pleasure in showing any visitors its skin. “Rest in I’eaee.r Old Brother Tilden talks, in his published interview, like a psor old “grantiv,” who is afraid that some younger “granny” his‘speciall may take the starch nut of y.
