The doctors say Wrightsville is
distressingly healthy.
The prospect is favorable for a
big crop of sweet potatoes.
A protracted meeting will com¬
mence at Arline Chapel Friday next.
Miss Jennie Linder gave a compli¬
mentary tea Tuesday evening to a
few special friends.
The heart-rending notes of the
practicing horn is heard in the land,
admonishing our citizens that there
is a well organized brass hand in
prospect.
Mb Frank Daley is having a tele¬
phone line erected. The distance is
between three and four hundred
yards, running from his store to re¬
sidence.
A Rainbow Party will he given at
the residence of 31 r, and Mrs. \V. A.

of Miss May Dell Fay, a visiting
young lady from Louisville.

There were five in number, ranging
in weight from one-half to one pound

med togteher, as it were, and their
appearance was simply superb.
Mr. Lewis Davis, a prosperous far¬
mer, living three miles from town,

We intended to mention the fact in

physical well-being of the town and
vicinity. Much valuable work in
this respect has already been done,
and we trust 'lie good work will con¬

Mr. J W. Atnerson came in Satur¬
day, bringing with him the largest
watermelon we have yet seen or had
any account of. It was taken from
his buggy and weighed on the hon¬
est scales of Arlir.c & Daley, reach¬
ing the enormous weight of fifty
nine pounds! From thence the mel¬

its point of destination. We have
entered Mr, A’s. name on our hook

the same time and place thank Mr.

we trust, a lasting .impression for
good with all present.

The Recorder force arc expected to go
out next Sunday and finish up Will Anth¬
ony’s “remaining few’’ fruit and melon
crop.
The various candidates arc vigorously
working up their respective interest by the
word of mouth. It is a little remarkable to
us that they do not engage the Recorder
to do their whooping up; but then we sup¬
pose they know what they are about.
Joe Little, Wrightsville’s clever and ac¬
complished barber, has recently purchased
a lot, and is preparing to build a house
thereon Joe is one of the cleverest and
most icliable tolored men we know of. lie
enjoys the confidence and respect ot all
our people and he deserve such, because of
his extreme politeness, accommodating
manner and honorable deportment.
Mr. Jackson 3Ielton, the fancy farmer,
sent t» our office not long since a vegetable
curiosity in the shape of a cucumber, or
cucumbers. It w«.s acluster of cucumbers,
nine in number, varying in length from 2
to four inches. It was a unique collection,
curious to say the least; and is further cv
deuce that 3I>\ 3IeIton is “keno! top row”
when it comes to “successful propagation
in the diversity of vegetation."
There was a “spike team" on our streets
the other day—if you know what kind of
team that is—we don’t. At any rate it was
a novel sight to us, having never seen any¬
thing exactly like it before. The vehicle
proper, was an ordinary two-wheel cart,
hut the motive power was the feature that
downed our curiosity bump, being “one ox
befoie one ox and one ox behind one ox."
Wc understand there are several teams of
this 4 ind in the county.

TO THE PUBLIC
Editor Recorder— Dear Sir;—
Please insert the following card in
your papei, not as a campaign docu¬
ment, .n the interest of any man or
connection party, but as an explanation Ilicks-Daley of my
with the late
compromise. II. A. IIodgks. '
'There appeal's in the Dublin Post
of the 4th inst, a communication from
Capt. J. II. llieks, in which he char¬
ges palpable fraud upon myself and
Mr. Ai V. Stephens in the late com¬
promise Daley pertaining between himself his candidacy and Col.
to
for Senatorial honors. It is proper
that I should inform the public of
the facts in the case so far as I am
concerned. Capt. Hicks alleges thaj
the following agreement was entered
into by J. M. Mason, J. 31. High¬
tower and J. M. Arliuc with J. II.
Fulgliuin, W. A. Webb and Ai V.
Stephens: “That not looking at the
past or the future, and not consider¬
ing any claim urged or set up by any
one, they look only at the strength
of the two candidates, and put for¬
ward the man most likely to win the
race.” lie alleges that myself and
Mr. Stephens committed a fraud up*
on him by not informing Mr. Shep¬
pard of tiiis agreement, and in not
confining the arbitration exclusively
to its terms. If there was any such
agreement as the above between the
parties it was not communicated to
me. The facts are these:
I was at my home, when I was
scut for by Capt. llieks and Col.
Daley, arrival to go tothecourthou.se. there Up¬
on my they both stated
to me that they had agreed to arhi.
Irate the differences existing between
them as to which one should he the
candidate for Senator, and had nun
tually agreed upon Mr. C. II. Shep¬
pard, Ai V. Stephens and myself to
settle the matter. They further in¬
formed me that they had selected me
as one of the arbitrators because of
the fact that I was the pastor of the
church to which they each belonged,
and that of all men they thought 1
was the proper one to settle differ
ences between members of my church
They also informed me that we wore
to settle the matter to the best inter¬
est of both parties, so far as we could,
and that in so doing, we might con¬
sider any matter we saw proper.—
There was no such agreement as tin
one referred to by Capt. llieks in his
letter communicated to me by either
Capt. llieks, Col Daley, or any one
else, and if any such agreement ex¬
isted I knew nothing of it. I was
merely called in as I understand, not
as a partisan of cither candidate, but
as their pastor to make peace between
brethren, ami in this capacity 1 act
ed,nnd'in no home other. Had I been left
alone at my and not been sent
for by these gentlemen, I should
never have sought the posit-ion, and
would not now have been the sub¬
ject of Captaiu Hicks’s venom. It
was only upon the solemn assurance
of Capt Hicks and Col. Daley, in the
presence of witnesses, that no com¬
ded plaint would be made, that I concls
to serve, and it seems to me that
it is very uncharitable in Capt Hicks
now to aceuso me of fraud, when he
knows that I acted from the purest
of motives, and at his own soliei-a
tion, and upon the expressed prom¬
ise that lie would protect me from
censure by any one.
Has tlie timclcoine when ministers
of the Gospcd by shall besought at then
homes aspirants for political
preferment, and asked to arbitrate
differences between candidates upon
the plea of brotherhood in the church,
and then he accused of dishonesty
because their decisions do not accord
witli the ambitions of the unsuccess¬
ful candidates?
I affirm that I lie charges of fraud
made by Captain Hicks are without
the slightest foundation in truth,
and appeal to a generous pul-lic to
pass decision upon the above state¬
ment of facts and see if I am guilty
of the charges preferred.
Respectfully*
II. A. HODGES.
