A TRUE SNAKE STORY.
A REPTILE IVHICH CHASES CATTLE AND
DRIVES THE PEOPLE FRANTIC.
Ilutler, O., says the Cincinnati
Commercial Gazette,,has been in a
feverish state of agitation since last
Sunday, by the report of a monster
snake that has been seen in the im¬
mediate vicinity. Last Sunday Nick
Corbin, one of the oldest and .most
esteemed citizens, and whose wwaob
ly is unquestioned, went tfbput a
mile out of town in search of a lost
pig, and as he was passing through
a thicket of blackberry bushes bis
attention was attracted by some cat¬
tle that were rushing frantically to¬
ward the river, and on searching for
the cause of the strange action of
the cattle, his attention was called to
a stnnge whirring noise in the bush¬
es behind him, and on looking round
was almost paralyzed at the sight of
an immense monster of the snake
species. It was of a dark brown col¬
or, with a flat head, and at least 25
feet long. It was standing with its
head about 10 feet from the ground,
weaving from one side to the other
in an excited manner. Corbin sudden¬
ly thought of some business in town
that peedod bis attention. He suc¬
ceeded in getting away without at¬
tracting the monster’s attention, and
with all the speed he could command
he rushed to Butler and spread the
report; and the people,-having the
utmost confidence in his veracity,
armed themselves with guns, clubs
and other weapons that were handy,
and about 4 p. m., about seventy five
men started for the place where the
snake bad been seen.
The ])1aoe was surrounded and
with tho utmost precaution, led on
hy Fnclo Nick, the men gradually
closed in. bittMio snake, but thero
were unmistakable signs of its hav¬
ing been there a short time before,
and after searching for a short time
a trail, which looked as if a log had
been drawn on the 0 ground, was found
leading towards trioOluo . hev
river,
oral men followed she trail till dmk
set in and then returned to town.' It
is thought by a great tnartr to be the
same snake so often seen ht- resident!*
of Moscow, ()., as the trail Ivd in
that direction. The excitement has
not yet subsided, and btaekiberries
are going to waste in the cotnmuni

A DRUMMER’S PETITION
MR. .J. K. DAWSON' HIVES A KKDOKTER
AN IDEA DU T1VO.
Tdr. J. E. Dawson, who swings a
grip for Lewis’ cracker factory, is in
the city. Mr. Dawson is one of the
old timers, and can interest a crowd
when hundreds will fail. Yesterday
he showed the reporter a drummers’
petition which is used by the boys
on the road.
Oh thou who forever abidetb at
home, look upon ns the sons of men
who travel to the utmost ends of the
earth, yea even into Texas and
through Indiana, and who knowetb
but, little ot the joys of a home, and
although among the wise acres and
fanatics we are despised and without
honour, yet do wo know that thy
son became upon ibis earth a travel*
ingVnan without even as much as an
expense account. Give ns each day
our daily bread but banish the dried
prune and apple from the hotel table
when strawberry is plentiful in the
market at six cents a quart. Lead us
not into temptation and deliver us
from baggage smashers, annoying
and impudent hotel porters and hack
drivers. Give us clean cooked food
and clean beds and banish the night
visitors that insist on entertaining us
after the light is put out. Forgive
oui trespasses as tve forgive those
who trespass againts us, but deal
thou thyself with the infidel who
countermands his orders, ami as we
are taught to love our enemies, give
us grace to love those who most vil
lify us, yea even the country editor,
for is he not paid in cord wood and
dieth without obtaining a postoffice.
And when the traffic becometh .dull
and waxeth blue, grant the new man
and liar liberal license, that he may
report exceeding prosperity. And
may those who come after us coun¬
termand our faults, discount our mif*
takes and duplicate onr few virtues,
I and when our season is over, may
onr average be such that the great
bookkeeper will take our account
from its gross total, deduct our fare
and leave a net profit of good deetbj
so that the grim Collector Death wil|
receipt for our bill and find us ready
