Majestic Glory and Beauty As He Saw

A recent business t rip carried flits

Whatever can enliven tin* imagination
and elevate the thought ? into higher
ntul nobler moods belongs to t his favor¬
ed region. From Salisbury to Knox
v i i to, along the line of the great South¬
ern Railway, the scene varies unceas¬
ingly and yet is ever on the highest
(■rate of of novelty and magnificence.
I-'or many a mile the journey is
along the winding course of the liis
torie French Broad river, sometimes
skirling its waters at the very edge
ii ml frequently crossing I lie stream on
picturesque bridges. For the most
pen t the course of tie* rim* is through
inonntain gorges, now habbling over a
rocky bed and tlien seeming to lie for
miles like a placid lake with hardly a
ripple to tell the surprising swiftness
of il- current.
For once I he rigid claims of business
seen to have gone down before the
charms of nature, and if (he projectors
and engineers had meant to do so they
could not have contrived more sticeess
fnliy to lay out their road for the joy
and delight of t he t raveler.
Alongside this wonderfully beauti¬
ful river view and in startling con¬
trast with it are the mountains on
either hand—not lulls, but mountains.
iSe'ii'dimes they rise precipitously
within arms’ length of the' coach to a
height ol 1,500 feet, and again they
swell and roll from the margin of
river in bold and graceful

Al one point one can see below the
#rade lie has passed over at as many
as fourteen different levels. Central
in all of this assemblage of
is the beautiful little city of Asheville.
Situated on an elevated plateau, it is
like a gem set in the bosom of
mountains. Surely nature and
never combind in a more complete and
harmonious blending. The charm
this unique and bustling little city
has been sounded far and wide, but it
most be seen and felt to be fully
ized. Flourishing schools, beautiful
churches, varied business interests,
equable temperature, unfailing water
supply from mountain streams com¬
bine to make it an ideal place of
dence.
Hotels and boarding houses abound
with prices to suit tho average
as well as those of greater or loss
length and fullness. This
happy experience was with the
tery Park hotel and with Mr.
siek as host. This hotel occupies
site of an old fort, and from its ele¬
vated position offers a most charming
and commanding view of the city
below and the mountains
tshaded porches, luxurious
tempting cuisine, splendidly
ed rooms, well equipped tables,
pent ine walks, shaded nooks and
tiful lawns make it an ideal
From the galleries of the hotel the
eye may travel over a horizon entirety
girdled by mountains. On every side
at distances varying from a short Walk
to a score of miles these eminences
vise in bold and graceful lines, three,
four, five or six thousand feet.
Not infrequently a belt of clouds
seems to cleave their sides, and at such
times from their summits the observer
can look down lipini the upper surface
of the clouds as upon the surface of a
calm sea, scarcely rippled by gentle
breezes.
Back of these mountains so clear to
view that the sense of distance is quite
misleading, the dim and hazy heads
other ranges lend an added charm to
