urged to be present.
We regret tkat another convention
has been called. The Record opposed
the move, believing that the executive
committee could and should have done
ibis work without bringing ibis addi¬
tional expense upon tbe people, and it
lias not changed in its opinion one
whit. But the committee evidently
though* different, or probably there
were some ends to meet that we knew
uol of, that would require the conven¬
tions actions to perfect.
Never! be Jess, tbe convention has
been called for May 18th, and must be
made a success. Two delegates must
be elected to represent Johnson county
on that occasion, but that matter will
be aitetided to by Chairman J. B.

During the last term of oiir superior
there appeard in the present*
ments of the grand jury several un¬
for remarks made by them in
presentments and the committee
by tlie former grand jur.v
said county to examine the books
the several offices of this count.\
by the committee appointed to
my account. The first tribute
paid me in said presentments, was
mat niter an examination of the
treasurers office, thy Hud a large sur
plus on hand, and think that taxes
should not be levied for more than is
necessary for the proper expenditures
of the county. I certainly agree
heartily with the committee in this
statement, but there are some extent!
ating circumstances connected with
the* levy of said tax, towit: When I
was about to make the levy of 1897,1
being a new horse asked my prede¬
cessor in office the amount it would re¬
quire to do the county's business. He
told me, nud I levied accordingly, ex¬ !
clusive of the bonds issued to build
the court bouse in Johnson county,
bill fortunately, I was able to run tile
county at such a reduced expense,
judging by past expenditures, (hut
the county now lias on hand a surplus,
and 1 was not at all responsible for
the state tax being as high as it was.
Since seeing what it takes for county
purposes, I will be abie to levy, nearly
ton dollar, of what will be necessary
lo run the county for 1898, and the’
county tax will thereby be muon less
for said year than for 1897.
As to the reference made concern¬
ing the wood, will say that t did not
go to every private individual in
Wrightsville to see exactly what they
paid for wood, but did pay the same
for my own use that I did to furnish
the court house, and bought it as
cheaply as possible.
As to reference made concerning
the payment of physicians in lunacy
trial, will say that it has been prao
ticed by my predecessors f»r time
most most immemorial immemorial, The i ne law uw ream r.qmits res

work without compensation.
In reference to the account remler
ed by me to said grand jury, will say
that being young in office, l followed
my predecessors in each item of his
account, and charged exactly the
same for similar service. I have some
of the original accounts rendered bv
my worthy predecessors, t for the same
amounts for similar service, and or
defed paid by one of said committee
towit: G. N. Ivey, while foreman of
the grand jury of Johnson county,
and having long ago espoused the
cause of “equal rights to all find spec¬
ial privileges to none,” I thought 1
was entitled, and think so now, to
charge and receive as olheis have
done.

Every man in llie United Slates is en¬
title to his honest convictidin and all
civilized humanity should respect the
same.
My amount being large is due to tlie
fact that the work of the ordinary
had heaped/ip said office by reason
of there being no ordinary in the first
part of the year. The bridges hail
gone down considerably and required
immediate attention.
My account for auditing and re¬
cording accounts was 75c for each.
Ordinary J. M. Hightower’s account
against the county, dated April 1st,
1892, the same charges—75c each—and
there were several of them, ’ was passed
upon bv the grand jury . and ordered
paid without one cent’s reduction, as
will be shown by the following:

This same bill, the charges allowing
the same figures aa my charges for the
same services, except that he made
charges for services that I did nnt
charge for.
There are many other accounts
bparing the same evidence, that could
be introduced if it were necessary,
which I do not believe, just now.
